It is good that Gov. Dayton is holding flood preparedness meetings in Winona and Mankato today. I applaud his initiative. Moorhead is about four days from a flood that is potentially worse than 1997. Rains and 50 degree temps are coming in spades this week. Since the Fargo-Moorhead area has not seen the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks type disaster yet, they prefer the annual sandbag method of disaster containment. Fine for the cowboys and independent trucksters.

But... disasters in North Dakota affect everyone in the region: insurance fund depletion, relief fund depletion, rising deficits,(we could use a few more crises to encourage federal involvement and exploitation) family tragedy affects that last for years. Although the Fargo folks think it is so macho to be independent, they are not. The interdependency of states is stronger than ever, and getting stronger. The old days of Texas' "Let them freeze in the dark." are dust.

So, Governor Dayton. Be the leader we hired you to be and get after this perrenial mess at the upper end of Minnesota's I94. Want to spend some of my money? Do it for permanent solutions to ancient problems, like the Red River of the North! Procrastination will not serve you well.
