Round smokehouse moved to Republic County museum

THIS PHOTO CAN NOT RUN OVER 6.4 INCHES WIDE -- A 120 year old limestone smoke house makes its way down a Republic County road Wednesday June 17, 2009, toward the Republic Historical Society Museum in Belleville.

If you haven't seen this smokehouse, you must drive to the Republic Co. Historical Museum site to visit this structure. Even the roof is limestone. It's an amazing building...and to think that it has been moved several miles to the Museum site! Congratulations to all involved toward its preservation.

If you drive up to Excelsior Springs MO, you can see a smokehouse on the historic farm property nearby. I think it was more rectangular than round, but it did the job of smoking meats. IMO, it's better to see the entire farm as it was in the olden days than to stick it inside a museum.

The farm place is called "The Watkins Woolen Mill" and it's worth a trip to see it. Much better than standing in long lines at Disneyworld when it's 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity!
