My hubby will be going to school to change his MOS and then in Sept. we are going to be stationed in Fort Riley. I want to know what's it like there? Is it nice? I hear a lot of people say there isn't much to do there at all. I have a 21 month old girl and a baby boy due in May so I want know what's the housing like? how many rooms will we get? what are some fun things I can do with my family? Is there a site I can visit that has pictures of Fort Riley? We will be in on post housing. This is our first time move and I'm nervous. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Dear Concerned, You will get a 3 bedroom because you have a boy and a girl. If the two were the same sex (both male/both female, you would on get a 2 bedroom. The only thing to do here on Fort Riley, or the surrounding area, is to go to the Manhattan zoo. Manhattan is about 31 miles from Riley. Next 2 towns are Topeka, about 68 miles away and Salina, about 58 miles away. Only shopping in town really is Walmart. Prices here are a bit on the expensive side, since there is no retail competition. The best price on the zoo, is the year round option. 50 dollars for 2 adults and as many children as you have. Exapmple family with 6 kids is same price as family with 2 kids. It is not a huge zoo, however it is a nice zoo. We have been stationed here for over 3 years and cannot wait to get out of here. Just remember these words... Fort Riley is NOT the real army. By that I mean this is the WORST place we have been stationed at in our 13 years in the Army! We have been all over U.S. and Germany. Fort Riley is by far the most horrid place we have been. Hate to be brutally honest, but you asked. You will survive it and thank god for the day you finally get orders out of this place. Good luck my dear.

im on my way there in april. i havent heard many positive things about this location, but i am going to try to keep an open mind, no matter what i read and hear about it. fort campbell is where i am currently and i love it here. everyone has hillbillies and people who love their cousins, not just tennessee or kentucky. theres a lot more to do here than it seems about kansas in general. gotta love the army.

I grew up an army brat and now my husband and I are stationed here. Just like most typical posts there is usually a small town or area that is known to be a bit shady because of the bars, strip clubs, etc. That's Junction City, and depending on where you live in JC can be just fine. Manhattan is nicer but because of the tension between the college kids and military sometimes going out to their bars can be filled with drama. We took our time and stayed in a hotel for a week before deciding on a place. I live in Ogden which is tiny but right between JC and Manhattan, only 10 min drive to either, and right outside the gate so is extremely convenient. Out of all the people that live off post we know my husband has the quickest drive. I'm use to small country towns and big city suburban living so I can see where everyone's views are coming from. The land is beautiful and you can find plenty of outdoor activities. The weather is nothing compared to what i'm use to so I cant complain. Yes the mall in Manhattan is small but for those complaining like its a deal breaker, most my life I grew up with Mall Of America a quick drive away and have survived just fine.

I lived in Manhattan and went to graduate school at K-State. I worked at Fort Riley for a while. It is a great place, beautiful country, and friendly people. Manhattan is the one in Kansas, not the one in New York, but there is still a lot to do. It is a very international community because of the fort and the college.
