I was almost 8 years old, standing in the front yard of the YWCA near Avalon and Sepulveda when this happened. I still remember the heat on the back of my neck and the fiery mushroom in the sky. Scary.

This explosion was NOT caused by an exploding 30,000 gal. tank. It was caused by the rear trailer of a Propane truck and trailer when the dome cover of the trailer started to leak. The driver was unfortunately standing on the trailer tongue between the two tanks (approx. 5000 gal. each) when the leaking propane found a source of ignition which was only a few feet away from where the truck was parked getting ready to depart.

Since this incident, Federal Laws governing the transportation of Flammable Liquids on our highways have be considerably strengthened.

I remember watching it from our rooftop and seeing the lids blow hundreds of feet into the air. Where did the giant lids land, I always wondered. We were near Figueroa and 228th. I always thought it was a truck and two guys smoking, that caused it.

I lived in the area when this exploded. I was shaken by the blast. The rumor at the time was a guy smoking caused it.

I watched this fire as a kid, the second explosion hit the lid flew off the tank, all i could see was heat waves coming my way and all the people started running, i slipped in some mud and fell, the heat waves passed over me and burned the hell out of me in spots , i was wrapped up like a mummy , 40 years later i still have the scars.
