Mr. Cohen appears to be totally unfamiliar with the basic tenets of Christianity. I would suggest he read the New Testament, as well as the core teachings of the Catholic Church with respect to social justice. I doubt that Mr. Cohen would approve of either, and it is certainly his right to disapprove of Christianity, in general, and the Roman Catholic version of it, in particular. However, he displays his ignorance in not recognizing that much of what he dismisses as "lefty" sentiment is at the core of traditional Christianity.

I like what Cohen has to say. Environmentalism has truly a religion with the Liberals, complete with Pope Algore and Saint Pelosi. If you question the tenets of Envirnnmentalism, they call you a heretic and try to kill your professional life. Sounds like a religion to me.

First Laurence Cohen insulted Unitarian Universalists. Now he's aimed his ignorant bigotry at adherents of the churches comprising the National Council of Churches.

According to Cohen the believers and ministers of the National Council of Churches "couldn't find God if he struck them with a lightning bolt." That is an absolutely disgusting smear against members of those churches. Cohen's column should be immediately removed from the website, and he should be banned from Hartford Courant.

Just how many times does it take a Hartford Courant columnist to express bigotry against a religious group before this newspaper gets rid of him?

LMAO!! It's not hard to see through your liberal BS, that's for sure! I'll bet in true lefty form that you HONESTLY believe that lefty liberalism is "God's word" or some such nonsense.

You're a dope.

I'm trying to think of how to say this politely, but it's difficult.

Sir, aren't you forgetting how many conservative churches openly let the Republicans use them for campaigning in the last few elections? Or how the Moral Majority made so much about fighting abortion while electing pro-big-business, anti-poor candidates?

For many Christians such as myself, concern for the environment and social justice flows from our understanding of Gods word. We support these causes BECAUSE we have read the Bible. We do the things we do because we believe God is instructing us to do it.

James 1:22-24:
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

God said that His creation was good, so we should respect that and not trash His world. God also cares about how we treat our fellow man, people whom God loves and Jesus died for.

Perhaps you don't know you Bible as well as you think you do. Have you ever actually read the Old Testament? The Jubilee (Leviticus 25) and many other economic teachings are FAR more liberal than any Democrat I've ever heard. Try spending some time reading Micah and see what you think. God RAILS against the Israelites for their unjust society and militarism as much as for their religious idolatry.

"The action of believers is more importent then ever...All people of good will must work to ensure the effective protection of the environment." Pope John Paul II

When the right went to war in Iraq and the Pope called it an UN JUST WAR and most catholics gave support to the war. Would you say the GOP was there religion.

How does Cohen earn a weekly place on the pages of a Hartford newspaper? He has been denigrating the city as long as I can remember and continually speaks out for the advantaged. Of course a living wage is not on his menu and he tries to slough it off as a savings to taxpayers. With all of the illegal aliens in our midst, the companies can really insist on rock-bottom wages so as to maximize profits. Who's left to pay for aid to these workers who can't make a living wage? We the taxpayers, of course. Meanwhile the real machos in the income ladder have reaped the benefit of the slashing of taxes, cashing in on their buying of Congress. Cohen will continue to preach the gospel of the "market economy". Did anyone get suspicious when this song was being sung all over the media before the "global" economy took hold? The worst part of this story is now being told: Namely all of that money we've been spending for "defense" is now being used to brutally punish any nation that will not bow down to the "market economy ideology".

Ludicrous. Last time I checked the Jerry Falwells, Newt Gingrich, Reverend Dobson, the folks who hearken to and applaud the upswell of the conservative religious right weren't "leftys" at all. What is Cohen drinking? Not from the fount of truth and knowledge.

Threats to freedom come from two places. The right and the left. Both attempt to use religion and government to further there causes. This is a perversion of both religion and of government. On paper our country is a republic, but through persistence has pushed us towards the pure democracy that Thomas Jefferson warned against. Democracy's flourish until the public realizes that it has access to the public purse. Once it the public realizes this it will vote in those politicians that promise the most benefits, until the government can no longer barrow money and the government collapses. There will be those that will refuse to believe this, but history has shown this to be the case. Of the money that you pay in Federal income tax, almost three quarters of that money goes towards debt service, not to pay for government or anyone’s pet project. Those are paid for through barrowing and inflation.
