I was just wondering who you think are the 10 Richest men in Clay County. Here are my picks. I may change them later, but these are the top ten that come to mind right now. I think we all will agree on number one.

1. Jennings White
2. Jimmy Dobson
3. Yancy White
4. James White Phillips
5. Neville Smith
6. Johnny Taylor Smith
7. Delbert Smith
8. Clint White Harris
9. Charlie McWhorter
10. Tie-Roy Morgan
10. Tie-Cletus Miracle
I've racked my brain and I came up with the same list as yours.

Your wrong! Mr. Oscar Gale House will top that list! What about the Saul Goings bunch? They are in the top five if not number two.

William Goins may fit in there somewhere. He sure don't spend any of his. He has 4 of the 5 cents he has ever made. Judge House is in good shape but in my opinion he don't make the top 10 list. Bill White is another sleeper who could figure into the list.

In terms of the list of the top 10 richest Clay Countians, I'd probably say about half of that list was wrong as to who's on it. Neville Smith, I rather doubt it, for example. But yeah, just for curiosity's sake I would honestly love to know who the top 10 are in terms of net worth in Clay County too.

True, true... Another thing, I would guarantee that if you compared the net worths of Clay County's 10 richest people to the top 10s of most anywhere in America our amounts would be laughed at easily. That would especially be true if it were somewhere like Lexington, Louisville, or even over in London, for that matter.

Honestly, in Clay County if you make at least $1,000 a month and pay at least some some your bills, you are looked at as being wealthy by many in the county, because a great many homes in Clay County don't even bring in that much. Some would almost swear you are Donald Trump in Manchester with at least 1 grand a month!

I know one he left out for sure that should be in the top 5, and that is Ed Jordan. Ed will leave someone in good shape because he is afraid to spend too much of his money.

I think he got 7 of them right for sure. I'm curious as to what would be your top 10?

your outta touch if you think 1000$ a month is enough for people to consider you wealthy, cuz i make more than that and by no means am i wealthy, the reason why I barely scrape by is,, so many people in this county and else where in the country rely on good ol uncle sam for their 1000$ a month,,, I SAY LET THESE PEOPLE STARVE AND DIE. THEN MAYBE WAL MART AND IGA WONT BE SO CROWDED ON THE 1ST<< TO HELL WITH THEM ALL> SLOTHS MAKES ME SIK...

I'm not sure who all I would have for the top 10, but I'd guess that about half of the names on the original list would be there. I'd even venture to possibly say that there would a couple of people in the county who are pretty quiet as to how much net worth they are sitting on, don't want to draw any attention to themselves that should actually be on the list.

Another strong possibility for a person to really be on the list would be someone who has either vast timber holdings or mining operations in terms of money legally made in Clay County. The Smith brothers would certainly fit the bill because of their coal operations, but there are certainly others out there. Basically that's how many of the earliest wealthy Americans were: land rich but cash poor, especially like the Virginia plantation owners, for example.

I was only referring to the perception that many people in the county have in terms of money. I hear what you're saying though, the day that Social Security and such dries up will be the saddest day in Clay County history, as there will be a massive amount of weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. Then you'll also see the biggest miracle this side of Jesus turning water into wine, as suddenly there will be a number of "disabled" people in Clay County will be forced to find work, and suddenly they can! lol

Judge House has money and was left money! He owns the dog patch shopping center in London. That's worth a mint itself!

I wasn't saying anything about people that actually worked until they became disabled. Like you, my dad also worked for a coal company, 24 years to be exact, and worked all the way up until the day he was injured by a falling coal slab and was no longer fit for duty. It's the people who basically have never worked a day in their lives and in many cases around here, are feigning "disability" just so they can get some easy money. Those are the ones that the vast majority around here wish would go elsewhere. Read just about the entire Manchester forum and you'll understand why. Ace, thank you for your dedication those 32+ years in the mines, I wasn't speaking out against people like you, just against the lowlife scums.
