Just wondering

Madisonville, KY

#1 Feb 21, 2009
At the store yesterday I was in line and there was a couple buying a whole cartload of pop and I heard them ask if they got a discount cause it was for Pat's Pool Room. The manager said it's tax exempt is all.

Thing is--they paid for it with food stamps. Since when do businesses get food stamps? I know old people who only are able to get 25 or 30 dollers a month and have to try to eke out with that. Now here's these people from Pat's paying for over 100 dollars worth of pop with food stamps.

Something is very wrong with the system here.

Obviously, one of two things is going on. Either somebody involved with Pats gets food stamps and is using them to buy pop for resale, which is illegal, or somebody is buying pop with food stamps and selling it to Pats for cash, which is also illegal.

I'd go report it but nothing would be done, it would all be hearsay. It just makes me mad--there are elderly people here who are trying to make it through the month eating cheap hot dogs and ramen noodles, then here's Pat's Pool Room using food stamps to support their business.

No one that has anything to do with Pats gets food stamps I guarntee that. WHat is probally hapening is the people that are getting food stamps are going to the stores and buying a big load of pop and then coming back and seling it to pats for a cheaper price, yes I think it is illegal on the persons part that gets the food stamps, but how is the people that run pats to know that they are getting it on food stamps...

Also I hate to bust your buble but go to the grocery store at he first of the month and you will see a TON of people doing this, most small businesses in clay co buy pop off of people for cheaper prices

Oh, give me a break. First off, why would any reputable business buy supplies from a couple of seedy looking, smelly people? The people at Pat's know darn well these people got the pop on food stamps. I CLEARLY heard the woman say "they said at Pat's you'd give us a discount since it's for Pat's." I was waiting to get in line behind them.

If other businesses do it, that makes it right? Wrong. It's illegal, and if these people can afford to sell their food stamps then they don't need them. Give it to the elderly people who are one step away from eating dog food to survive.

I know for a fact that Mikes quick stop does it also, but seriously ask yourself this if you were running a business and someone offered to sell you pop at half price would you not take it?

if this bothers you that bad, you need to call the welfare office on your "friends" that are selling their stamps. your so worried about their kids going hungry, do something about it! i bet if you call in on them several times, something will be done about it.

I am thinking about calling since I'm the one who saw and heard it, but I know how it would go down. It's just my words against Pat's Pool Room. The employees at the store wouldn't back me up since it would probably lose them their jobs, and I can't blame them. I did go back this morning and that same cashier was working and I went through her line and asked her about it. She just shook her head and said that it happens all the time. She did say she didn't think it was right but her bosses knew and didn't say anything.

Oh, and this was IGA in case you're wondering. It probably happens other places too, just whereever there happens to be a sale on pop.

i'm not big on "telling on people", so i would rethink calling the welfare office. there is always two sides to every story, maybe those people were selling stamps because they needed money for a bill, electric, water, something! i hope that would be the situation, but usually when people are doing things like that, they are buying drugs or alcohol, something they don't need! i don't know what you should do, i'm glad i'm not in a situation like that...

Why would you go call and tell on something that you really dont know much about. How do you know those people was not just saying that to try to get a discount. I use to work at IGA an I waited on the people from Pats several times and I know for a FACT they do not get any discount on pop, so why would they tell people to go up there and act like they did?

Also alot of those people that sell some of their stamps make 500 dollars a month, and they have to pay their bills out of 500 dollars and maybe last month they did not have the money to pay their electric bill and needed the money.

But lets face it sometimes these little stores like pats have to do stuff like that to stay in business, if we rated on all our little "mom and pop stores" like pats we would be left with McDonalds, Wendys, Arbys and so on. YOu can call and rat on pats but the fact is most all little stores around here do the same thing. and the people that own pats are good people so why couse them trouble.
