People in this area work in the natural gas industry, just like people work in the coal industry. What's wrong with switching over? Coal has been going down hill, long before Obama, but he is easy to blame. There is alot of people that abuse the system with gov assistance, but they do it no matter who the president is, George bush didn't do a thing about it, or anybody else. I had rather see 10 people abuse it, if one child can stay warm at night or get something to eat. Have we as a people gotten so bitter, that we don't care. It's our government, our country, and it still working pretty good after everything is said and done. Like many republicans said 10 year ago, ifyou dint like it....leave.

Truth I don't know where your info that coal was declining for years come from but it was not true. I jus recently retied, would still be working if after Obama and his epa made it so hard mine had to close. You talk about nothing being done to stop abuse, well ever time something is proposed to stop abuse, here runs out them the old democrats saying them mean old republicans want to starve granny and the kids, make school kids go hungry or some other idiot reason so they can keep the check drawing crowd voting for them. Look if someone is disabled and can not work, help them, if they are old help them or if some have a hard time because of some medical or other emergency give them help to get back on their feet. But to make a life of nothing but having kids, want look for work, and drawing a check it is a disgrace. Hey truth you see on tv where they showed in Hawaii how much they have drawing a year, 66,000 bucks bet that is more then you make in a year and you think we can continue that. The bible says if they want work don't feed them, lets use that and see how quick these low life scums that cheat honest descent people by their laziness and not careing attitude make it. You think people are bitter, it is not being bitter but fed up with ignorance, no morals, no self pride and crooks that take advantage of a system set up to help those needing it. It people getting feed up with crooked politician using the system to keep a class of people depending on them just for their votes. Natural gas is where coal is, if it so much cheaper then pray tell me why our utility bills have doubled.

Mr coalminer retired, take some time to turn off fox news and stop listening to rush. The big coal companies are pulling out of these parts for a reason. They surely aren't going broke. They are going out west to work, where high sulfur coal is easy, cheap and safe to mine. If you would do a little research, you would find out that clean coal powerplants have already been constucted for cities like Kansas city. They don't give a damn about the poor old hillbilly or that big clean coal powerplant would have been built in bell county. But, they do need a scapegoat to pull out, and it's easy to make Obama it to bigots like you. As for coal miners losing jobs, I know quite a few, many are close friends. Nearly all of them are planning to draw out on their unemployment, which has been extended by Obama and the dems, against the rep wishes. Then they plan on getting their disability, some pain pills for bad backs and live the good life....with the helpnof Obama and the dems. Most miners will not work the jobs you expect these other people to do. The ones that are going to continue to work, plan to use the programs the gov has to offer for reeducation and trains for other jobs, with the help of Obama and the dems. Still yet, the ones that will take the other jobs, get priorityoer everybody else because of being coalminers, thanks to Obama and the dems. As for me, I work for the state, don't get no help from the gov. Not had a raise in over 7 years. Support a wife and 2 kids on under $2000 a month. I hae been on hurricane creek in Leslie co. Where some of my family died years ago, what I saw there was families of extreme poverty, kids that where thrilled to just get a pop tart. What kind of job is going to pull these families out. Alot of money left that holler on trains and trucks, but not a dime stayed to help. The only thing the company left was dead bodies, poverty and misery for generartions. So drive your big full sized 4 wheel drive, pulling the atv behind and use the bible quotes and blame they one president that may understand the plight of hillbillies and save the only true resource we have, our mountains. If the coal was not dead here, they would be building us those clean coal powerplants instead of switching to natural gas.

It betas me ever time someone disagrees with you idiot democrats you blame it on fox, heck only time I watch tv it is not fox , might be a good movie or discovery channel. Truth need to change that name, you not know the truth if it walked up and kicked you in that sorry rump of yours. Now crawl of get mad and whine truth, but for once in your miserable life learn you some facts and stop blaming people for that idiot in the white house with his idiot friends for your loosing your plant in bell county, geezh what use to talk to a fool with a one track mind you never understand anything unless you hear it from some idiot politician that you worship.

The Impact of Coal on the Kentucky State Budget

Coal mining makes up only 1% of the employment in Kentucky.

Kentucky provides a net subsidy to the coal industry of nearly $115 million more than the industry brings into KY.

This loss of $115 Million is paid for by the Kentucky Taxpayers.

East Kentucky miners may have to move to Western Kentucky or Indiana to keep a mining job, but you might have to join the UMW in some areas.

Information from MACED:

While Central Appalachian coal production has been in decline since the 1990's, the rate at which it is dropping has increased. The federal Energy Information Administration estimates that thermal coal production in Central Appalachia will drop 70.8 percent from its 2011 level by 2020. At the same time, Western Kentucky coal production is growing, increasing by 2.5 percent last year, with employment levels remaining steady. Union County, in the western coalfields, has now become the state's largest coal producer.

The high sulfur content of Western Kentucky coal, which once gave Appalachian coal an advantage, is increasingly irrelevant due to modern pollution control devices at coal-fired power plants. Additionally, Central Appalachian coal is becoming more expensive to mine due to diminishing reserves, while natural gas is now a cheaper and more competitive alternative to coal for many power producers.

Coalminer retired, the only fool is you. Do you think those regulations only apply to ky? lol. Those same regulations aren't stopping new clean coal powerplants from being built in other states. Kentucky has 2 rep senators and we have rep Hal Rogers, what have they done? Nothing but run their mouths at election time. They sure didn't do nothing when they had control of both houses. You are a rude and bitter man, that reacts likemost people that have ideolegy you have. Attack when offended. lol

Truth you have no idea on coal use. The statement you made about going west for high sulfur coal is about a stupid statement I ever heard, did Obama give that statement to you. Any fool knows a coal powered plant wants low sulfur and high btu coal which is what the south east is known for. It sulfur you fool that plants have to use scrubbers to remove from burning coal, geeh don't just love idiots. You and this mrs happy just democrat scags that rant on like you so smarter then everyone else, got more wealth and make fun of poor people. You 2 democrat hacks need to go peddle your crap some where else. truth your statement about miners drawing unemployment and looking for pills shows me and any honest hardworking person what you are a fool. Any hardworking coalminer rather be working and supporting their families and not be a low life scum like you looking for a government check. It pisses me of how democrats of today see a government check as a badge of honor, what happened to the good old democrats who believed in families, work and dignity. Now you 2 idiots can go stick your brown noses up Obama butt and act like you so better and smarter then real people, but got a news flash and it not from fox news people are getting sick and tired of low life scum like you that blame everyone for problems your so called genius have made. Now get mad and whine but a day of awaking is coming and the sooner the better.

Burning coal releases radioactive materials (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material -> N.O.R.M. google it) into the atmosphere that would otherwise have remained trapped in coal seams forever.

This means that coal fired power plants dump more radioactivity into the atmosphere than nuclear power plants.
