Speaking of idiots like quitter nutjob sarah....

David Gregory Lets Rand Paul Pretend that War Has Been Officially Declared

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) invented a “unilateral” Syrian War, telling David Gregory on Meet the Press,“No president should unilaterally go to war without congressional authority… But absolutely if congress votes this down, we should not be involved in the Syrian war.”

There is no Syrian war right now, and neither David Gregory nor Rand Paul seem to understand the War Powers Resolution.

Watch here:
Paul ignored the War Powers Resolution and pretended that President Obama declared war on Syria. He did not, and yes, these little details matter. They matter a lot. The President proposed a short, limited engagement. The president does not need congressional approval for limited military interventions, but he chose to ask for it of his own volition.

The War Powers Resolution was a reaction to former Republican President Richard Nixon’s secret bombings on Cambodia. It has been interpreted by constitutional experts and previous presidents as giving the president broader authority to engage in limited military action overseas. However, it also limits executive power. Per the Act, the President has to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and the President only gets 60 days of limited engagement before he or she must declare war and get authorization for the use of force.

See? Declaring war is not the same thing as limited military engagement — per the law. This is not a matter of opinion. Plenty of us disagree with this, but that doesn’t change the law.

We should definitely be debating whether or not this has been abused (it has, in my opinion), but that debate shouldn’t grant us the right to make up declarations of war where they do not exist, especially before engagement has even commenced.

It’s a shame that Rand Paul is such a tool full of misguided presidential ambition, because we can always use more voices against war. But those voices need to be tethered to reality in order to effect change. Paul doesn’t get to make up wars just to justify his position and David Gregory never should have let him get away with this rather glaring moving of the goal post.

Post Traumatic Bush Disorder: We See Lying War Mongers for Profit Everywhere

Seeing Bush everywhere is a sign of PTBD — Post Traumatic Bush Disorder.

Just because President Bush lied us into a war based on nonexistent WMD and his Vice President puppeteer’s former company Halliburton got filthy rich off of it does not mean that every person who claims we have a moral responsibility to take some kind of action in another country is also lying and is also hawking for the defense industry.

It’s not the same even from the outside. To wit:
No one is pretending the Syrians had something to do with the attack on 911 so we need to invade them with boots on the ground.

This is not a ruse to justify making big bucks for contracting companies the President and/or Vice President ran prior to taking office (see Republican former VP Dick Cheney). Dick Cheney got a 34 million dollar “signing bonus”(as Chris Matthews called it) from Halliburton for becoming the Vice President, as reported on his May 2001 disclosures.

Also, Cheney’s ties with Halliburton and subsidiary KBR did not end when he took office. If you can’t spy the glaring differences yet, try this and ask yourself if community organizing for the poor in Chicago carries the same suggestion of financial gains via war:

“Cheney was defense secretary the Pentagon chose Halliburton subsidiary Brown & Root to study the cost effectiveness of outsourcing some military operations to private contractors. Based on the results of the study, the Pentagon hired Brown & Root to implement an outsourcing plan. Cheney became Halliburton CEO in 1995.”

While the stock price of Raytheon, an international aerospace and defense company that makes the Tomahawk cruise missiles many speculate would be used in Syria, reached a 52-week high last week on the heels of the news of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s chemical attack on his own people, President Obama does not own Raytheon, has never run Raytheon, is not receiving major payouts from Raytheon. Currently, to much objection, Obama is the person making the decision regarding Syria.

It’s a bit of a stretch to implicate Obama in a conspiracy to make money for a company he has no stake in. Furthermore, Raytheon donated more money to Mitt Romney in 2012 than to Obama,$143,806 to $89,788, so it can’t be that. They gave just under that to Republican Scott Brown, who took in $84,350. Their PACs, which gave 4 times more than individuals, gave a majority to Republicans.
There are ten members of Congress who own Raytheon shares. Seven of them are Republicans and three are Democrats. Now that Obama has taken Syria to Congress, people who stand to profit from the matter will have a vote.

Corporate profit is not the motive for this Democratic President, but that doesn’t stop the false equivalencies to Bush nor the accusations that he’s hawking for big oil like Bush, as if there is no difference between an administration personally knee deep in oil interests and one that is not personally knee deep in them (there is no one in government who is not impacted by big oil interests, sadly — even if it’s just playing defense against negative ads secretly paid for by big oil).

George W. Bush ruined the presidency by earning your mistrust. However, applying that mistrust more strongly to this president than to Bush to make up for not applying it to Bush is a logic fail. Each situation is different, and Obama is not Bush.

Cynicism passes inaccurately and lazily for intelligence in us, the pundits, and the politicians.

Bush and his buddies took us to war for very cynical and personal reasons. They pretended Iraq had something to do with 911, using our emotions to blur the facts. Fox viewers still believe that Iraq was behind 911. Imagine their heads popping if they learned that their jingoistic party chant USA! Drill here, drill now! directly benefited Cheney’s former oil company, which opened what they called their “second headquarters” in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. USA!

Assuming Obama has the same character as Bush is like assuming all presidents are FDR. It’s illogical. The case can be made for it either way if you presume to know motives — but that’s a fallacy. It’s fear-based; a sign of past trauma informing the perception of unrelated events.

The facts are that the Bush administration and the media lied to us on an epic level about WMD for purely cynical reasons. Obama doesn’t own a Blackwater/Halliburton/KBR and neither does Biden. This is not Bush.

That does not imply or infer that we should do even limited strikes on Syria, but it does remove a fallacious and lazy argument against it.

If you have PTBD, look to the Teapubicans in the House of Representatives to remind yourself what Bush was really like, because it’s not community organizer and fighter for the poor President Obama, and you have to be quite a desperate hack to pretend it is.

White Supremacist Felon Caught Amassing Weapons Arsenal, Minority Hit List

No matter where you stand on the gun control spectrum, sane and reasonable people should agree that a felon who served 13 years in prison for manslaughter for the shooting death of one man and the felonious injury of two more with his 9 mm semiautomatic pistol should not be able to amass an arsenal of 18 guns and 45,000 bullets. He also was in possession of bullet-proof body armor and had a list of Jewish and African-American leaders in the Detroit area.

Meet Richard Schmidt from Toledo, Ohio, proprietor of Spindletop Sport Zone, a sports memorabilia shop located in Bowling Green, Ohio. Apparently, Mr. Schmidt was selling inferior, counterfeited sports jerseys, ball caps, purses, etc. that he imported from China. The fake NFL items included jerseys with misspelled players’ names and overall poor quality craftsmanship and attracted the attention of federal agents, who made several purchases at his store and then executed warrants at his business, home and three vehicles.

Georgia Republican Caught Bragging About Sabotaging Obamacare (VIDEO)

When will the callous disregard for human life end? How do those steadfast on obstructing and delaying the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) not understand that they will be causing the suffering and likely deaths of many because of their failed ideology? What do they have to offer citizens if they were miraculously able to stymie Obamacare? The answer is the same it has been for decades; nothing.

What is true is that over the last several months Republican politicians have been in a competition with themselves. It has been a competition as to who can be the most aggressive in obstructing the President on every issue, and at no time is the well-being of American citizens considered. It has been simply a visceral hate for the President and his policies no matter how many people it helps.

Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens (R) is the latest candidate attempting to out-macho other Republicans in what he is doing to obstruct Obamacare. When one listens to the thrill in his voice on how he intends to attempt to stymie the health insurance exchanges, it is rather scary. It is hard to believe that politicians would attempt to use the law in Jim Crow fashion to cause actual harm to the citizens of their state. What is even scarier is the response, the applause, and cheers by the audience. Can they not see the evil in their actions?

The Affordable Care Act made provisions for ‘navigators’. These are people hired by organizations to help people purchase health insurance policies. The federal government is offering training programs and grants to help create these ‘navigators’. In order to obstruct this process, Hudgens says in the video below,
The problem is Obamacare. We’ve got to now determine what we can do to solve that problem.

Let me tell you what we are doing; everything in our power to be an obstructionist.

You have probably have heard about the exchanges. Well exchanges are coming to Georgia, not the state is not setting them up. The federal government is going to set them up.

But we have passed a law and with the help of senator McCoon and others, we have passed a law that says that a navigator, which is a position in that exchange, has to be licensed by our Department of Insurance. The ObamaCare law says that we cannot require them to be an insurance agent, so we said fine, we’ll just require them to be a licensed navigator. So we’re going to make up the test, and basically you take the insurance agent test, you erase the name, you write ‘navigator test’ on it

He has also stated that Georgia has passed a law that forces insurance companies to state specifically that any rate increases are not the fault of the Governor, general assembly, or department of insurance, but because of Obamacare. In other words, irrespective of reasons, he forces insurance companies to lie.

Americans are waking up. Several town halls have proven that the expectations many Republicans had that opponents of Obamacare would storm town halls did not materialize. In fact, the opposite has occurred (see here and here).

One can only hope that Democrats fight with this same intensity promoting Obamacare. Moreover, one hopes the Democrats will campaign on Obamacare during the 2014 campaign. There is ample video of many Republicans who in order to placate the Tea Party overtly take positions on Obamacare that hurt the well-being of their constituencies. As Obamacare is rolled out successfully in states that put the well-being of their citizens ahead of ideology, state run by obstructionist will kick them out of office as citizens realize they were lied to.

Understanding The History And Purpose Of Fox News

You’d think a thing like FOX couldn’t happen in the United States. Although they’re free to be crazy and free to support the Republican Party, you’d think Americans would be too smart to fall for the made-up outrages, dishonest reporting and relentless appeal to our meaner nature.

Unfortunately, many Americans are not as smart as we used to assume: a huge swath of Americans (especially elderly white Southerners) believe FOX is just another news media outlet. They aren’t.
What is FOX? Pensitore Review pulled no punches in answering that question back in 2009:

FOX News is indisputably the most popular cable news channel. And yet in 13 years, Fox has never broken a story. That’s okay, because it is not in the news business. It is in the news-shaping business. Its programming is an admixture of right-wing propaganda and fear-porn for feeble-minded paranoiacs, served up by spokesmodels who have no clue what they are reading.

Whew! Could that be true? I report/You decide:
Nixon White House aide Roger Ailes in the 1970′s created fake news stories that favored President Nixon. He shipped these pre-mixed video packages to TV stations around the country at the expense of rightwing extremist Joseph Coors. It was all b.s. all the time, but the TV stations, pretending they had a correspondent in Washington, ran this propaganda as straight news. Now that Ailes runs FOX News, his goals are the same: to spread republicanism by altering the news.

FOX is a “relentless agenda-driven 24 hour news opinion propaganda delivery system”~Jon Stewart
“They’re a Republican brand. They’re an extension of the Republican Party with some exceptions”~Larry King

‎”[Fox is] widely viewed as a part of the Republican Party: take their talking points and put them on the air, take their opposition research and put it on the air. And that’s fine. But let’s not pretend they’re a news organization like CNN is.”~Anita Dunn

There are thousands of examples of FOX not just “leaning” in a particular direction on an issue… but actively changing around the words and meanings of interviews to make them seem to say the opposite of what the person interviewed actually said; of lies about what happened; of incorrect graphics…for example, calling Congressman Mark Foley a Democrat when he got caught in gay chatter with pages and calling Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords a Republican when there was an outpouring of sympathy for her after she got shot.

FOX took a sparsely-attended tea-party rally in Washington and spliced in video of a heavily-attended event of an entirely different nature from months earlier.
