Moving the Manassas Area

Los Angeles, CA

#1 Feb 21, 2010
Hello-
My family and I are relocating from Idaho to Manassas. I have 2 elementary school aged daughters and was wondering which area is the best to look for a house. We are looking at Bristow, Gainesville, Haymarket and Manassas. My husband will be working at Micron and we would like no more than 15 mile commute for him. Any thoughts? Would love to read pros and cons to the areas.
Thank you for reading.

Bristow, Gainesville and Haymarket are all excellent choices, with Bristow being the closest. I would avoid Manassas. The prices may be a bit cheaper, but the neighborhood quality is not up to par (crime/schools) with the other 3 choices.

All are excellent, but my opinion is that there are two choices, Bristow/Gainesville (equivalent) or Haymarket. If you want the larger house but less yard, look to Bristow/Gainesville. If you want the opposite (larger yard, smaller house) look to Haymarket excluding the Dominion Valley subdivision.

GTina and Mike:Thank you for the responses. Moving to a new area, there is so much to do and think about. Mike, you are correct...My question is too vague.
I am really inquiring if looking into Manassas is worth our time. Yard is so not a priority, just need space to grow (if the weather and soil permit it) a few tomatoes and let the kids swing.

There are a few pockets of nice subdivisions in Manassas, but in my personal opinion, the bad outweigh the good. Gangs are more prevelent in Manassas. The Bristow/Gainesville and Haymarket areas are newer, safer, and more family-oriented.

I would stick to Bristow, Gainesville, or Haymarket. Bristow would be closest - only about a 5 mile commute. Schools are a little more crowded in these 3 areas but as the other posters said the areas are overall newer, safer and more family-oriented.

Thanks for the advice. Now I just need a house that is not a short sale.

I currently live in manassas and love it. There are not gangs there like there once were years ago as they deported most people. We just bought a house 6 months ago but had lived in manassas area on and off the last 5 years. I agree with the others there are certainly bad places in manassas like anywhere else. I would stay away from anything in manassas park. However the nicer neighborhoods are between 234 business and 234 bypass (this also puts you a bit closer to bristow) but you will probably get a cheaper price on your house. Also There are some newer townhomes off of 234 business built in 2002 right near 66 that are nice and within walking distance of the elementary school if you care to walk your kids to school in the morning. Good luck on finding your home. I would recommend staying away from short sales I tried a few and they are all just a bunch of back and forth before the seller goes bankrupt it seems. Foreclosures can be good and there seem to be more straight sales.
