On Electing an African-American President

Full story: Atlantic Monthly

My hometown, Malverne, on the South Shore of New York's Long Island, is all white and mainly Catholic, but it shares a school district with a mostly African-American neighborhood called Lakeview.

Having known Mrs. Reed for years she was well intentioned and justified back in the day. She now needs to step back and let our younger families step up and take this community forward. She is living in the past and as a respected elder in the community her actions and especially her words do more harm than good. This is not 1970 as your column suggests. Her small circle of constituents are a detriment to this middle class stable african american community.
