How can these scum suckers with badges look anyone in the eye? Lack of conscience seems to be the criteria for "serving" the public these days.

For all the comments...guess we forget who you call in an emergency...911 I think. So when the sheep (public) run out when the Wolf(bad person) comes around...the sheep all run to the Sheepdag (police) so take your comment somewhere else you all forget. Does not matter where you work, only takes one bullet and the family member wont return home.

There are over 25 thousand people who take the NCPD test and most of them would gladly take the job even if it paid 25%less. Get real Mr Lawman , you are expendable. As for the danger aspect, more construction workers lose their lives any given year than law enforcement people. You got where you are because of stupid self serving politicians like Tom Gulotta , some savvy negotiators and arbitrators who give away public money like party favors . The culture of entitlement has gotten way out of control. Spare us the rhetoric please, if the job is too dangerous just quit. There are thousands lined up behind you to fill the void. Anyone who thinks that these bogus holidays are justified needs a brain transplant.

live in Malverne over 18 years, the cops are a truly beneficial asset of this village. Hwever, guys, you know the taxes of this village are OUT OF CONTROL. Don;t you realize the abuse will turn the public against this service, and you will all be out of a job. Do the right thing here, sheesh have neighbors paying well over 15K in property taxes, we can't afford to pay these perks to you guys any longer, and keep a roof over our heads. Honestly, my roof your benefits, my roof wins.

I wonder why Groundhog Day isn't celebrated.
Probably because it's a required overtime day (contractual rules) where the boys are required to show up fully armed and act as body guards for Malverne Mel

Dr's that botch operations ,accept cash and trips for prescribing certain (not necessarily the correct) medication and charge astronomical fees that just perpetuate the whole medical field glut on the American T_t. Fix your own house first. These days are nonsense ,but don't throw out the baby with the bath water.

Time to GET a contract. And a watchdog. Let's start with zero-sum: federal holidays and that's it. THEN the negotiations begin, hopefully arriving at a provision for prior approval from someone (OTHER THAN ANOTHER UNION MEMBER) who can verify the practice about other county unions' paid holidays. Or on second thought, let's just GO DIRECTLY TO ZERO, and use the Nassau county police force already paid by our taxes.

I am completely disheartened by the stand the Malverne PBA is taking on this issue. I bought my home in Malverne for several reasons, the most important being the culture of this community. Many of these officers were born and raised and come from respectable familes in the community. It is obvious to me that the "special days" clause was discovered by accident as someone (Jacobson possibly) looked into compensation on the legitimate special day death of Ronald Reagan. The bar graph the village presented showing the escalation of this abuse from 2004 to 2008 looked similar to embezzelment. They tested the waters, were successful, became greedy and short sighted and this is how the abuse was discovered. As for the union lawyer stating he has never seen a grievance argued in a public forum (public board meetings)and should be done behind closed doors I completely disagree. Thank you Mayor McDonald for making the decision to inform the people that elected you to this issue. You should be commended for not displaying the politics as usual mentality. My advise to these officers is stop taking the advise of your attorney. What you did was wrong contractual language or not. Put your tail between your legs, give back the credited hours and issue an apology so the village can move forward and you can gain back the respect of the residents you serve. You risk losing much more than money if you don't.

The problem is if the Malverne Police officers on duty are asleep in their houses instead of patrolling, they can't respond to a call, so the residents take the bullet in more ways than one!

maybe you shouldnt blame the officers, they were given these holidays BY THEIR SUPERVISORS, start with them the same chief that "discovered" these holidays and brought this in to light. he got paid for these holidays. funny how it was ok when he was on the other end, now that he is responsiable for the over time he has a problem with it.

Why give any paid holidays to cops? When they joined they should have known they'll be working nights, weekends and hoildays so why the special compensation???
Its all because of unions. They have no legitimate place in today's workplace. It is especially agrivating when they represent public employees. IT IS TAXPAYER MONEY that is paying the bills, not some corporation that can go out of business if their products cost too much.

I can't afford the taxws any more also i am losing my home to the bank the taxs are too high. the police are arogant ass wipes dump them all .anyone that took the money should pay back or be fired.every mayor had knowledge of what was going on but they lack spine.all the chiefs and so on.dump them all Malverne purchased 2 BMW MOTORCYCLES after 9/11 for 250.00 they where donated by BMW what people were not told was it cost 75.000 dollars to outfit and train 2 cops.now the officer got hurt on the bike and has sued the village. i think they settled for an undisclosed amount. it had to be big because they say there is a non discloser agreement.they will never give you a pass on a ticket. show me a cop that give another cop a ticket for speeding. you can IT DON'T HAPPEN.i do not hate cops i i do not like people that think they're better than anyone else

Lets dump all the village police and take on Nassau county police. its one of the largest tax burdens Malvern has.the cops here are nasty to the people of the village for no reason. make them pay all the money back.every mayor had this knoledge but lacked the guts to confront the issue.this is what you get from putting lawyers in office.dock thier pensions as far back as this goes.
