I have the same problems with Malvern School District, see the email i wrote below to representative Mike Burris
I am sorry to bother you and take up your time, but I really need some help with my son and the Malvern School District. My son is a 7th grader at Malvern Junior High School. He has always attended Malvern school district and had As and Bs and was on the honor roll from kindergarten through sixth grade. He even received the citizenship award last year. When my son started seventh grade back in August 2005, a change occurred. When he started attending Malvern Junior High School, he because a different child. He was being bullied. He was tearful everyday after school (and still is, this has gone on the entire school year), he has no self-confidence, low self-esteem, and is scared of everyone at school. He has been called gay, fat, a girl, pushed, kicked, slapped, spit on, his personal belongings (binders, school work, jackets, etc) thrown in mud puddles and trash cans. He has had detention hall several times for trying to defend himself and has been suspended twice, the second time being today. Both times are a result of him defending himself. Now my honor roll student is going to fail the seventh grade and as a result of failing will fall into a deeper depression and self-hate. Seventh grade and the Malvern Junior High School have destroyed my son. I HAVE CONTACTED THE SCHOOL AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR ABOUT THE BULLYING AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO STOP IT, I HAVE SPOKE TO THE SUPERINTENDENT. My son is a gentle soul. He is very polite, well mannered and never curses. Both times he has been suspended has been the result of bullying and the kids kicking or hitting him/putting him in a headlock, where he has to defend himself. I have been told by Mr. Roberson at the Malvern Junior High School that my son is just suppose to sit there and let someone beat on him or choke him and not swing or push them off until a teacher arrives to break it up my son could be dead if he did that. What this boils down to is that I need some help, and I need it really fast. My son will fail the seventh grade because he was suspended the first time on March 10 and they do not let the kids make up their work when they are suspended so he got zeros for everything and his grades were Fs because it was the beginning of the fourth nine weeks, he has just now been able to get his grades up to Cs and Ds from those Fs and today he is suspended again for again defending himself when some bullying kid has him in a headlock and is chocking him. Where will this bullying end? Would you let someone have you in a head lock and just sit there not doing anything while they choke you? Could you survive everyday in fear and ridicule, being called gay, fat, ugly, and the others calling your mom names? How would you react? What will this lead to? My son committing suicide? Please help me and my son .we have no where else to turn, noone here will stop this. My son is desperate, I am all he has to fight for him, he is severly depressed. He has a disablility, he has ADHD, again the Malvern Junior High School has failed me in that respect to, they have not offered him any help with that disability even though I do my part by having him on the medication. Please find some way or someone that can help us. We cant go through this again next year.

I wonder if this child was having probelms in his alternate learning environment with his behavior? Is it a rule of MES that if in alternate learning you can't attend outings with your class? The rule was broken twice if this is the case. Our school district is teaching this child at a very early age he is not the same/equal to others. What a boost for self esteem. More education needs to take place and consideration of these children. Administration is the first place to start with education, school nurses, and class teachers. I know we have a problem with our children/teacher ratio. I am sorry this child had to be seperated from a school outing. I hope the administration will take a long hard look at the policies they have in place for any child that is in a alternative class setting. I know you cannot reward misbehavior and I would never expect this to be the case. Maybe the alternative classroom needs to be reviewed for appropriate placement. I think this is a ready available area for kids that get in trouble in the regular classroom and are sent here as a discipline. How much effort is put forth in determining placement in the alternative classroom? Guidelines need to be applied and steps that would lead to this placement.

If the parents had volunteered to go, there would not have been a problem. I don't know about their child, but, there are some children that need parental assistance.

Ummm excuse me, but are not all kindergarten children in need of parental assistance especially in our school district where there are around 200 kindergarten students? As you can see i posted above regarding my 13 year old son, but I also have a six year old son that is in kindergarten in the Malvern School District and I will tell you this, no parents were invited to go! It was for the kindergarten students and teachers only! If you do not know the facts, and you do not live in the area, please understand your comment is offensive! You cannot put the blame on the parents. Ever heard of the Americans with Disablity law? Look up ADHD with google or something and you will see these children are covered by the LAW! School districts are suppose to provide them with the supervision, they are suppose to be allowed in the regular classroom with an teacher and a TEACHERS AIDE JUST FOR THEM, that is what the law says. The law also says that the school must provide counseling, and cannot deduct from grades for poor handwriting, inablility to sit still to do the work, etc, the ADHD child is entitled to give the work orally instead of written. ADHD children are the most advanced and intelligent children there are. They make the best grades if they are given the chance. My son has ADHD, from kindergarten through sixth grade he was on the honor roll with either all A's or all A's and B's and he never opened a book at home to study or do homework, and he has NEVER been in an alternative or special classromm. I have copies of all the laws and rights of an ADHD child if you or anyone would like to see them you can email me at [email protected] and I will forward it to you.
I do not think this child has been given a chance to thrive and be helped, instead it sounds as if he may turn out like my son with no self-esteem, self-confidence or a light at the end of the tunnel because of the ignorance and unfair democracy of the school district.
