Jack McCoy is a one of a kind. He raced car's all his life, mainly on dirt tracks in many states. He raced on many public roads, interstates, gravel road and city streets. I enjoyed being around him at the tracks , his shop just south of Trumann Ar. about three or four miles. The moto cross track on the levy held many races for many years. He made fun and excitement out of machines , grease and fire. Helped me build a small block chevy to race in the hobby stock class in Imboden Ar. No, it wasn't legal by any means what so ever. Just make your way through the turns as best you can then pass about two cars on each straight away. After about three races the owner of a track bumped me up into the Modified class. Jack won a lot of races down in Texas against some very fast late models. He was always helpful and nice to everyone. Wasnt scared of nothing. Not even the wooden bed in a chevy pickup whe it was on fire with a drum of Methanol fuel strapped to the fron of the bed. He was in the cab and I was in the bed. Was I scared? Damn near jumped out going 60 mph half way to Riverside speedway. Jack laughed the whole time. He owned and operated the Esso Station on the corner of Hwy 63 and Hwy 69 back in the 60s. Not sure if I ever saw him without that cigar in his mouth. I havnt seen him in years. I wonder where he is . Thanks Jack. Me and a lot of other people had a good time watching you burn gas and burning quite a bit ourselves. I had a yellow number 3 Firebird I built in about 1980 or 82. I had nerf bars all around it and a bumper made of 3/8s steel angle iron. I asked Jack if he would come take a look and give me some advice. A few days later him and his son Cliff came down to the shop. They stood in front of the car for over a minute. Finally I asked him what he thought. Jack pulled the pipe from his mouth, looked right at me and said , " you have heard the old saying havnt you?". I said , im not sure. Right in my face and very clear he said a bit loud. " Keep it simple stupid" With in a minute he had the cutting torch lit and metal started falling off. Part of that old shop is still there. Behind Dr. Lewallens Dentist office. Life's a gas.
