Habitat for Humanity

Has anyone heard anything on the habitat house on Academy Street or who will be the family to reside in it? I've heard a few things and I'm jogging my mind now thinking. I personally think it should go to someone who had children enough to comfortably fill it and a family who works their rear-ends off and can afford it.

A final decision on the family selection is scheduled to take place at the next North Country Habitat for Humanity board meeting in December. Various families have applied and interviews have taken place.
75 Academy will be turned back into a single family residence with multiple bedrooms in order to accommodate a large family. For many years it was a three unit apartment building.
The south facing wall & foundation is being repaired and the building secured from the elements and intruders (human & otherwise) for the winter. The roof has been replaced.
Things will probably slow down this winter as plans are formalized and money is raised. The roof replacement had to be completed professionally due to time constraints of securing things before winter. It took quite a bite out of the bank account in spite of the fact it came in under the estimate.

It's amazing how this organization works. Such very caring and thoughtful people and there are people out there who believe if they apply for a habitat house, they get a "FREE HOUSE". Habitat is NOT a handout, it's a hand-UP. There is still a 20 year morgage to pay and things that have to be kept up. The family that is chosen has to be responsible enough to make payments and know that they have to help put in 500 hours of sweat equity. I love volunteering and to know I can help make someone a happy home, makes me feel good. I just might hop in on this one in the spring and help with it. It's a great way to make friends and help someone who deserves a nice home to live in and care for. GREAT JOB HFH! Your organization is truly something to be proud of!

What a wonderful Christmas gift to a very hard working deserving couple to finally be able to have their own home. Now their children can spread their wings persay and have plenty of room. The best part is that the 20 year mortgage they will have is interest free and will be much more affordable than renting. Congrats Habitat Family and many years of happiness to you and your children!
