I am sure I am in the minority but I have done everything within my powers to make sure my children did not ride the bus. The bus is a horrible mixture of k-12 that breads nasty behavior and subjects children to knowledge and behavior they are not yet able to comprehend.
I also think that all childrenin k-2 should get bussed if needed, they are way too young to be walking, crossing roads etc..I also believe that (older)children do need to be taught responsibility and be given the oppurtunity to walk to school. We shelter our children way too much and make them scared of the world. My daughter walked home from school everday from grade 3 on(I told her the rules, walked the route with her before school was in session showing her what was expected at intersections etc..), and the first few day I watched her ( or her grandparents) from a distance to make sure she was following those rules I set in place during our trial run. Child molester will always be part of any society, teach your child what to look for inform them what they are and where they are. Your child could be "snatched" in your front yard .You need to be aware and informed not scared.
It sounds like you did a great job of teaching your daughter "how" to walk to and from school. It is critical for parents to teach the rules and expectations for safety and then monitoring to see how she did. Nice Job.

I don't disagree that kids should be taught about the dangers out there but come on!! I am not going to steal my 5 year old's innocence by telling her what a sexual predator is!!! I do not shelter my kids at all. When my oldest turned 8 we had that conversation due to a boy at school telling her he wanted to have sex with her!! There is an age appropriate time (for my family) that we explain these thins and it angers me that the school is forcing me to explain this to my child at such a young age.
As far as the busing I don't disagree either. I pulled my child off the bus after she was punched in the ear and the chest by a boy and the monitor told her oh well. When I confronted Lisa Dupruis at Davis she told me that the "Bus was conductive to that type of environment"!!! Needles to say we drop our youngest off and let our 10 year old walk! There is no easy answer as the buses are no better than a five year old walking! They're both terrible ideas!

How naive are you?..You should and need to be talking to your child about sex offenders. I believe they call it "Stranger Danger" you are not taking their "innocence" away you are educating them to not go look for the lost puppy or take candy or go into someones house they do not know for any reason at all. You need to teach them that no matter what NEVER go with someone you do not know and if you do know them and they make you feel uncomfortable run away and tell someone you trust. It i your job as a parent to potect and teach your child. I can not believe you are hiding behind the whole innocence thing when you seem to be the one most upset about how corrupt and sick people can be.

Please, please ,please educate your child on what to do in case the most horrific scenerio ever happens and I pray it never does.

To repeat, the whole walking thing has been the way it is for many, many years. Where was everyone last year, or the year before, or the year before, etc.? Didn't you care about the kids then?

No way would I let my first grader walk to school in this day and age even if it was just up the road!

Never said I didn't teach my child about strangers. What I said is that I am NOT going to explain what a child molester is to her. FOR OUR FAMILY there is an age appropriate time to explain those things and 5 isn't it! She knows all about strangers but how do I explain negotiating traffic or if some one was to follow her home how to handle those situations. Children this young simply do not comprehend the enormity of these situations! No matter how much you "explain" to them they are in the end still 5! I have every right as a concerned parent to voice my opinion. Funny thing is I'm not harping on the sex offenders I also said that these kids aren't capable of dealing with all the neurotic drivers in Malone, the bullies and being responsible pedestrians! Not sure where your getting I am the most upset about how sick people are lol but OK. I have concerns over these kids walking AND the bus situation. Neither is ideal. Maybe I am naive to want my child to not be jaded by the time she's ten but I could also call you a cynic for wanting a 5 year old to know what a sex predator is.

ahhh You Nailed it on the head, why are these people so defensive if you choose to protect your children? You get called names for stating how you'd like to raise your children. And for pointing out the obvious fact that 5-6 year old children can't comprehend all the possible dangers, but of course some perfect parent out there has, because they walked up hill to school both ways, so should little children. What a jaded society. Almost like they want a child to get hurt. It will serve the little bastard right for not being as smart as me or my kids!!

ask not what you can do for your children, ask what society can do for them, so you can avoid responsibility.

Obviously that's what your parents did. Now look at the mess society has to deal with (you).

I actually got on the school bus when a pre-k and kindergarten child were getting off the bus at my house. And guess what? Their were about 30 kids on the bus that can hold about 70-75. Plenty of empty and 1 child per seat. But, yet my child who is 6 years old can't ride the bus? How is this saving tax dollars?? I'm working and taking on my responsibility to our wonderful society and paying my taxes. The set of policies helps out the welfare! They CAN walk and get their children because they don't have a JOB! I cannot get out of work to go pick her up! I work from 7am -6pm. That is my thanks for being a Village of Malone resident! What the heck are the benefits of living in this Village? High taxes for the welfare!! They are the ones that call the Village Police every 5 mins, they are the ones that have brought this Village to hell, they are the ones who expect a hand-out at every turn. But, someone who is trying to work can't even get the school bus to pick up their child for school??!?! I'm NOT asking too much!! I give enough to this SOCIETY!!

Maybe the bus was full when it left the school? I am sure the children getting off at your house were not the first. And I am suprised you were able to get on the bus IF that happened the bus driver was in the wrong since they are not supossed to let parents on the bus as its a safety issue.

Since you seem to have it all together with a job and being such an awesome productive member of the villiage I am sure you and some of your friends and family members could start a little group of parents with the same concerns who arent working at the time the kids are walking to and from school and walk with the children.

I am the first drop-off, I asked the bus driver. And when the kid falls asleep on the bus, a Pre-K kid, I went on the bus to find her. It was nearly empty! Want pictures? You wouldn't believe it! I expected there to be less bus runs and more kids on the bus! Friday was the same way! I had to go on and get her bookbag and thought maybe it would be fuller because Thursday was the first day. Well, still just as empty! I would love to start a walking group of parents. I can't join it because I am working. Most parents who can transport their children choose to drive. But, who wants to take on the responsibility to transport a 5 or 6 year old in their car? Do you want to?

I have done it before and will do it again. So get off here and start on a proposal for the walking group instead of expecting someone to do it for you. Maybe some of the now driving parents will switch over for the health benifits (sure the parents and kids could both use it)

The bus driver could loose his/her job for letting you on so when/if they cos you have it posted all over topix maybe you can hire them to walk with your kids.

I'm going to quit my job so I can do it! I'm going to go on welfare so someone can do everything for me. Was I asking for a hand-out? NO. Asking if all children ages 5-9 can ride the bus isn't too much to ask. I ask for nothing. Work 55 hours a week to support my children. When I can't get the bus to stop then why not quit. That is my option. Collect social services....why not? I could then live off of you! As for the bus driver...yes he can go on welfare with me! Or I should have left the kid on the bus and got turned into CPS for abandoning her. She was sleeping, let her sleep, let her go back to the bus garage and forget about her for the night. Would the bus driver lost his job then? Either way...
