It's no secret that the local cable providers have NO franchise agreement with the town of village to protect their cable franchise since they refuse to give senior citizens a discount. However, if one checks one's bill from Time Warner you will see a charge for the "Franchise Fee". Why? And just where is this money going if it's not going to the village or the town? Why are we paying a franchise fee for something that doesn't exist? Is this an illegal charge? Is the money being taken in by the local government anyway? Is it a "pay-off" to the municipalities to protect the local provider?
Check your bills when you get them and then call the Town Supervisor and the Mayor and ask them why. I did and they have yet to give me an answer. Perhaps something more publicly vocal is called for. Or an investigation into the charge. Who knows? Time Warner may owe a lot of us some money that they collected errantly.
What do you all think? And PLEASE, keep to the subject and post some intelligent responses. Leave the name calling for the other topics.

All I know is...my bill from Time Warner is way to high!! I got rid of my satillite service because it was to high. I went to Time Warner who gave me a good deal for the first year...then after that my bill for TV, Internet and phone has risen to $191.00 a month!!! But they are running a special now for new customers for a total of $103.00 a month. WTF? I am calling them to complain since I heard if you do..they will lower your bill rather than have you switch back to satillite. Anyone else have the same problem??

i have a digital antenna from channelmaster. hi-gain, very directional, amplified, with a rotor. after the digital over-the-air switch, i now receive 26 stations, mostly canadian of course, 5 are french only. i installed it in '06 for $480. i have not had cable since 1988. who needs more channels than that?

cable is a scam, programming can be had over the air for free or on the net using netflix, hulu plus, etc. there is no reason to have cable anymore.

go to solidsignal.com and check out the antennas and accessories. you can save a lot of money in the long run.

You're a smart man Juju. Unfortunately, I like certain programming (sports) too much to do that. But it's a great idea. That's all we had as kids were antennas.

sure! it wouldn't hurt to check it out. keep in mind we are miles away from nowhere so you need the best high-gain digital antenna, with amplifier and rotor and high quality coax cable. get it up as high as you can. mine has given me no trouble and it's been up there for 6 years now. you also might need a digital converter box, if your TV does not have a digital tuner.

i only get WPTZ sometimes, when conditions are right, because dannemora mountain is in the way. i get all kinds of stations in the toronto area.

good luck!

yes, that's all we had too, and they were primitive compared to today's technology. i've moved twice in the past 20 years and left my antennas behind for the next person. THIS time it's going with me, it's by far the best i ever had.

if you're a sports junkie you wouldn't be happy with an antenna, especially being so remote up here.

geez, i ought to sell antenna systems!

You might be miles from nowhere, but your in a great spot. We can live close to a lot of thing, all the sport, plays down here. But most of the time it takes a hr to get their and then find parking and pay for that too. You can drive for a hr and have the same thing I have. And wire digital antenna works and dose have some sports.

It's the old scam,by the cable companys and the dish companys, one will make an offer you can't refuse and you save a lot for a year or so , then they up the price ,so the the others will now do the same and all will switch, this cycle goes on for years , wrong is all the old equipment when you switch goes in the garbage ,kind of a waste

Cable, DirecTV and Dish are all brutally expensive. Let's face it, they are all robbing us blind.

Cable TV is one the biggest rip-offs going. The franchise fee is paid to the village as protection money to prevent any other cable company from coming in to Malone. The town has no franchise agreement because Time Warner won't give senior citzens a discount. Got forbid they lose some of their profit afterall.
Cable has some fine channels on it but along with those are the stupid infomercial channels, too many sports channels, church channels, etc. that no one watches or at least very damn few watch. Why do we have to pay for channels that clearly are not worth having? They bundle them up and shove them down our throat. I think the cable system should go municipal the way some power grids went. Town owned and operated could save boatloads of money. Dump Time Warner and get our own system in the area. It's time to look in to it and it's not unreal to do these days.

Hmm. Might be worth looking in to. I still think Malone should develop a local municipal cable system and dump Time Warner. It could pay for itself and support itself. They have municipal power suppliers like in Placid and Tupper. Why not do the same thing with cable TV? There's nothing stopping them.

what's your opinion on time warner cable and its VoIP telephone service? I dropped at&t and verizon over five years ago because they were too expensive. I was able to call England with a complaint with no surcharges on my phone bill. Two computers with a wired/wireless modem rounds out my cable. No complaints.

Maybe if the village got on board with the town the cable company would have to do something different. I like the idea of a municipal cable company and an ala-carte program choice. I'd dump all the sports channels and religious channels and shopping channels that we're paying for. They're nothing but space fillers that the cable company thinks people want. How many people actually watch the EWTN channel compared to say, History channel? What's really annoying the amount of commercials we have to sit through these days. AND we're paying to watch them! And then they add those stupid infomercial segments where they're hawking some God-forsaken junk on there. Even FX Capprara has an all day channel on at times. Who in the hell actually watches this shit? No one! Get rid of it and cut the cable bill.
