Check it out. It is an interesting story about Malone and the slums that are eating away our village.

Please do not feed the trolls. Any interaction with them fuels their feeling of being needed and they will continue to return. Thank you.

Does welfare pay $500.00 for rent a month in this area? And also, if rentals are HUD approved, the places can't look this bad, Morton St. That place , loss for words.

I thought is was great that jack stewart was brought in front of the village board to eplain his slums. They are full of drugs, sex offenders and the poorest of the poor. He should fix them up.

If you can read Dr. Martin's missive and view the photos and not be moved to anger, disgust, and action you are part of the problem. Ms. Chapman's response is measured, thoughtful, but somewhat inaccurate in that it misses one of Dr. Martin's points-despair.

'Tis time to rise up! we can sit at our keyboards and bemoan Malone degradation and criticize and blame others. But, until we are willing to accept responsibility, to ACT, to DO, to TAKE BACK OUR VILLAGE, we are hypocrites and are as guilty of causing Malone's "death by slums" as those who active cultivate it.

I have limited my community activity to sitting at my keyboard-just as almost all of you have. No longer. I will be at the next Village Board meeting and I will want answers and solutions, not pablum or cliches. I want those who demand a better Malone to do the same.

Dr. Martin has sounded a clarion call, and regardless of your opinion of him, he has actively taken a stand and is actively trying to improve OUR community. Something that many here demand--of others (you know who you are Yup and xdrunk). I challenge all who proclaim their love of Malone, who despair about it's regression, and who chronically tell others what to do to get out from behind the keyboard and TAKE ACTION.

Two Viet Nam era sayings come to mind: "Push, pull, or get out of the way." "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

Who is willing to actually DO something?

they pay 5-600 a month in Malone. These places are not HUD approved. Not sure where that came from. They wouldn't be approved by any agency.

I have been doing something and I will continue to be active to get rid of the slums and drug dealers. I think neighborhood watches could do wonders. Walk in you neighborhood in the evening. Stand in front of the neighborhood drug house. Just having citizens on the street will make a difference. Some people will be reluctant to go in and by their drugs if there are others standing around. A physical presence on the streets and sidewalks in your neighborhood will help. In addition, call the code office and report houses that are falling down and run down. The owners will get tired of that. Interestingly enough, Mr. Stewart has been picking up garbage from some of his slums --which has never done before. Your active presence in your neighborhood will be a start.

How is this class warfare?

I'm a homeowner, and I don't care if my neighbors are rich or poor. Just keep your property maintained! Besides, since this thread is targeting slum lords, so it really isn't picking on poor people, is it?

Why don't you go over and help them maintain it? Why are you so great?

It was obvious today that the conversations about the slum houses has got some owners "trying" to clean up. I went down Morton St today and there was a truck picking up garbage and work being done on the building. Obviously the Stewart's are responding to the light being shined on their 11 slum houses. We will see how long they keep it up.

I agree that neighborhood watch groups could be very effective. We can take back our village from the druggies and slum lords but we have to get up and do something not just use our keyboards.

The solution is to move out of the village and let the scumbags have their own little slum haven. Very few have the means to have a vehicle and they are too lazy to walk any further than Kinny's to get their Ice beer and show off bare chests with tatts, ugly fat women with strollers and their pitt bulls.

I've worked for property owners who tried to keep their places up but you would not believe how some people live. It's worse than animals! It's no wonder the landlords have an attitude. And it's not just welfare doing it either. We went in to one apartment that a girl skipped out on and it was a total disaster. And this woman had a good job working for the county with a decent income. I won't describe what we found as it turns your stomach. It's hard to believe people actually live like that. Another place was trashed by what one would consider "normal" tenants. They turned out to be so bad the landlord evicted them. Both of them worked and they had decent money coming in. They were just animals who apparently never had a decent upbringing by clean parents.
Too many places are the result of the tenants. Yes, the landlords get sick and tired of it too. They just give up trying to run a good building because of the riff raff around here. To get these people to vacate a place takes time and money and legal help. It's not always easy. It's nothing to take up to 3 months to get a slob out of your place and in that time they'll trash it even more out of vengeance against the owner. Some people in this village should be living in the town dump.
