I was there on Sunday afternoon. It happened right in front of me and my family. My husband was the one who noticed the man's boogie board in the water. Then we saw that poor man floating still attached to his board inside a wave. I ran over to the life guard and informed them. It was all I could do to stay calm. I had watched the man all afternoon in the waves. The waves were huge and very dangerous that afternoon. We prayed as a family for that man. I still can't get the image out of my head...

I was there as well with my family. A lady next to me started to say help him. I looked and saw the body in the water. A black man wearing a full wet suit with a boggie board attached to his arm. I started yelling to the lifegaurd (a lady) who was unaware of what was happening, to get out there quick to help. He was dragged in by about 4 people as the waves continued to crash in. Last I heard is he regained conscienceness later but not for long. I don't know his status. No one new at the beach on monday either.
This was a day that I had 2 of my best boogie boarding rides ever in my life. DREAM RIDES. After 30 years of boarding. I will never forget that day for 2 reasons. I have had a hard time getting the images out of my mind when I start to sleep. I hope he servives. Needless to say, I didn't go out in the water the next day. I will say this, to many people go out at Zuma during big swells with no fins or experience. A deadly mistake..

That was me floating. What happened is that I hit my head on the sand bottom and actually caused a brain bleed. I was unconciouse from then on and dont remember anything. Apparently I was airlifted to UCLA and came-to late Monday. Besides the headaches and lingering lung infection, I should make a full recovery.
I do have questions about how long I floated for out there and who were the folks responsible for my rescue.
If any of you contributed to my being noticed and found quickly, you have my eternal thanks.
Also the whereabouts of my gear.
Thanks again

Gilly, I can now tell my son that you are OK! We were all so concerned about you after the day of the accident at Zuma. I couldn't stop thinking about you and worrying if you had left any children at the beach when they air lifted you to UCLA. I am so glad that my prayers and those of others were answered...that you are now with your family and friends. God bless and take good care of yourself!

Gill, its great to hear you made it. I will try to answer a couple of your questions. There were 2 people swimming nere you and 2 lifeguards that pulled you out of the water. The waves were rolling in so it wasn't easy for them to get to you but I would say you were face down for about 30 to 45 seconds before they started to pull you in. Our station had 2 lifegaurds that day thank god. I believe because of the big waves and dangerous crouds. The lifeguards that saved you with mouth to mouth and other techniques should be commended because I am amazed you were saved given the fact that you weren't breathing and were face down in the water. You may not know this but the tv show COPS was there. They arrived as you were being worked on by the lifeguards. It made me sick to see them show up and start to film given that your life was on the line, but you may want to contact them to see if they have any footage to give you or at least you can watch it on tv. Maybe one day I'll see you at Zuma 1 again. Now we know why the life guards beach report always says "Swim and surf nere a lifeguard station at all times." Especially when your by yourself out there. Sounds like you have a great family dude. Enjoy life.

Yes, a wonderful family that was there when I needed them most.

I had intended to join my usual buddies and bodyboard with them. We surf year-round. Unbeknownst to me, they had left early to take someone to the ER who broke his nose bad. Another got slammed hard on his back the day before and sustained a soft tissue tear and another bruised his hip and leg so they called it quits earlier than usual. The swell was steadily increasing since we we had been tracking it and riding it since Friday. When I arrived that Sunday after work and seeing nobody I knew, I wisely chose to surf specifically IN FRONT of the LG tower.

There are so many Thank You's that are in order.
Lifeguard, Bobby Cooper who helped pull me in and CPR'd me. The families present that alerted the lifeguards in the first place. The airlift crew who got me breathing, they say. The Trauma Team at UCLA. And of course my family. Who's prayers and concern can't even be quantified nor measured in any form. Their love saw me through this in one piece. God had many angels watching over me that day and saw fit not to take me.
Its a very inspiring thing to be given another chance at life. One I won't take for granted.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, everyone.

For anyone who took my comment yesterday about "Of course the gear Thank God your OK" the wrong way I apologize. It was meant as a complement to Gill, meaning even after everything he went thru he still wants his gear, so he can ride the waves again. He's got alot of guts. I'd be too scared. I'm sorry Gill you took it so wrong. I'm even sorrier you really thought I'd ever written anything negative about a friend.
