What types of businesses would Malden like to see developed in its region???Just Curious..

I think that it needs a larger bookstore, a cafe and some more places where people can gather to socialize.

What does Malden need? It needs to be bulldozed!@ It needs new leaders! It needs residents who take interest in their community!
If you want to see what Malden could be, just go North to our neighboring city, Melrose. Their downtown area is active and alive with residents coming and going and SPENDING their money in their own city. And why are they so superior? Because their leadership didn't sell out their residents and take away every bit of green space or empty parcel of land and build huge, ugly SKYSCRAPERS like Malden has done, and is still doing! The result, is most native Maldonians have left, are leaving, or desire to. The city is filled with apartment dwellers (living in those huge skyscrapers and developments) who have no connection to the city and don't care about it, they just use it as a portal to Boston or elsewhere.(How convenient for them as Malden has not one, but TWO train stations). Ugh! Sorry to those that hold hope for Malden. Not even relocating the monstrosity AKA Malden City Hall, and opening up Pleasant Street will help this city. |

malden could certainly use some decent retail vendors other than the dollar stores that are up and down pleasant street.

I share Kim's frustration.
Malden right now is a simple residence for people working or going to school in Boston. Melrose is so close and appears to be so much nicer. And I also agree that that as it is right now, it is very diffocult to work with. Opening PLeasant Street from the Malden Center Stop will certainly help. It is starting to get more attractive. Maybe we could start by transforming it into a shopping center. And what Malden needs is an initiative to help shop owners to transform their outer appearance. Pleasant Street is ugly (as is Washington Street in Boston). It needs to brighten up with shop owners that are willing to contribute to changing the community. Does Malden need coffee shops and book stores? Of course!!! Where? Pleasant Street would be a starting point. But they need to look attractive to young educated people. We need attractive looking stored, mixed with tradition. Stored with polished solid door knobs, no cheap one dollar stores. The flower beds around Malden are pretty, but streets need to be upgraded, Street cleaning needs to start earlier in the year and property owners must be alerted by the city to clean their sidewalks from leaves, snow and trash. Oh: Stop and Shop, how ugly can a parking lot be in the center of this city? Where is the flair of a WholeFoods? We need quality of life, PLEASE!!! |

Something else: Pedestriant Zones!
Nobody needs cars running down Pleasant Street. Shop owners should be able to unite themselves and go to the city to make Pleasant Street, Exchange Street, those should become pedestriant zones. Parking should be shared with the ugly gym, or the whole buildung should be bought and torn down to create a recreational park. Why is Davis Square in Somerville so popular? Because people walk around. Maldonians need to get on their feet! |

Lower water bills. Has anyone seen their latest bill. Are you kidding me - they changed the schedule to monthly from quarterly and thought they would slide in an unnoticed increase to go with it. My own bill is up 35% from previous month - I'm not talking usage increase - 35% rate increase.

Right on John....You hit the nail right on with their sleezy tactic of a monthly water bill and sneaking a rate increase by 35% on top to mask it. They don't publish the rate but if you compare from the last quarter you will see the difference in price. Plus the new trash fee being imposed in Sept...Malden needs a change from the top down....time to clean house at city hall!!!!!

The next lynn...
we need to stop building apartment complexes, and fix the roads. alot of people here dont spend their money on goods, but rather on repairs to their vehicles from road hazards. |

Pleasant street would be a great place to start.. Opening it up sounds like a good plan.. Adding some decent shops.
But honestly a face left isn’t going to help this cities real problems. |
