Heard many shady things about Maui Chief of Police Tom Phillips. If you have corrupt officers in your police dept....and you do nothing about it...you're just as corrupt. And the attitude towards tourists who have had a crime committed against them....they could care less. Lowest priority crime on their list. For an island that makes tons of money off of tourists, you'd think they would try to keep a positive image for tourism. Not so much!!! Visitors beware...locals are literally just waiting to steal your stuff....and cops won't do a thing!!! God job..Tom Phillips! pffft

As a future Maui resident, I would like to say, "Stupid is as stupid does!" One less non productive, disfunctional, useless, meth using idiot who is nothing but a danger to society and the residents who would like to keep Maui a beautiful place to visit and live. I'm glad the officer was not seriously injured. Way to go Maui 5-0! Stay safe!

I'm sorry "Mike" but I think you should think before you make comments like this. Especially if you plan to live on an island like Maui. The man shot may have been suffering from a meth addiction (which from your tone I'm sure you know nothing about) but he was still a person, someone's son, brother, cousin, uncle. So how dare you, without knowing the family of this man, say what you said. You may want to learn some things about Hawaii before you move here because the #1 thing here is FAMILY! It is the biggest part of the culture and way of life here. If you don't, I have a feeling you will not be treated "well" when you move here. Its not the white people that the locals have a problem with, its the people who move here with the mainland attitude and think they can change Hawaii into what they think it should be (trust me, I know, I am a white girl who was born and raised here). So have some compassion "Mike" and be careful what you say, on an island this small you never know when you are talking to someone related in some way to whoever you are talking about, and it's probably more often then not!
