Extra campus security officers were on duty yesterday at Ramapo College after a 300-person disturbance Tuesday night that ended with six students being arrested.

Officers from eight jurisdictions spent more than an hour trying to disperse the group -- many of whom appeared drunk, Mahwah police said. No one was injured, and no property was damaged.

Police arrived on campus about 12:30 a.m. and found large groups of individuals fighting in a beer-can and trash-strewn area outside the Village Dorms, which typically house upperclassmen.

"There was shoving, pushing, threatening of physical harm. There were some punches thrown. A lot of little clusters of things," Mahwah Police Capt. Stephen Jaffe said.

Mahwah police requested assistance from the Bergen County, Ramsey, Upper Saddle River, Allendale, Waldwick, Saddle River,Morris, & Sussex counties Franklin Lakes and Suffern, N.Y., police departments.

More than two dozen police officers, along with Ramapo College Security, worked to disperse the crowd and in the process arrested four people for disorderly conduct, riot and failure to disperse.

Those arrested were: Nicholas Roman, 19, of West Paterson; James F. Kulinski, 21, of Cranford; Ian P. Temchin, 23, of Wanaque, and Nicholas M. Grant, 19, of Flemington, who was also charged with possession of marijuana and having a fake driver's license.

Two others, Zachary E. Lyons, 19, of West Orange, and Kyle P. Mihansky, 19, of Scotch Plains, were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, riot and failure to disperse after the dispersed group reformed outside Pine, Linden and Laurel halls and began fighting again.

Campus officers also allegedly stopped Lyons while he was attempting to break into an unattended Mahwah Police vehicle that was parked near the scene.

"That's still being reviewed," Jaffe said. "We're deciding whether there will be additional charges."

The campus was back under control by about 2 a.m., he said.

All six people who were arrested were processed and released with a Mahwah Municipal court date of 7 p.m. Sept. 22.

The riot charge is the least serious offense under the state's riot statue. A riot consists of a group of five or more individuals who fail to disperse, Jaffe said, adding that the offenses would probably result in fines and possibly probation depending on whether the students had prior records.

The college, in a statement, said some disciplinary action was taken and cited campus policy, which allows for interim suspension. No specific information about these students could be obtained because of privacy laws.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the college, said Anna Farneski, assistant vice president of Marketing and Communications at Ramapo.
