No settlement between Mahomet-Seymour school district, union
#1 Aug 18, 2010
In this economy where families are struggling to meet day-to-day needs and are lucky to have jobs, I find it rediculous that the teachers would be taking this position. I, like most people in the area, have a job where I not only had to live without a pay increase last year but also had to take a week furlough, so in essence taking a 2% pay decrease. Here we have a school system that is financially sound and the teachers are trying to take that away. What do they think will happen if they get their way, the school will just go further into debt to pay their salaries? Not likely, 1st we will see cuts (say goodbye to Spanish in jr high)and cuts mean less staff. With the district having to cut to make a balanced budget, we will have teachers complaining about not having any help (obviously all the teacher assistants will be let go). I have always supported teachers making more money but this time is different, take the proposed pay raise and work through this down economy and re-negotiate in 2 years.
