Hello,
My wife and I are trying to find out the history of our farm. We bought the farm from Leman Close. It is located at the end of Jones School Road. Near Pikeview. We have a very large house sitting near a one room School House. Both within 100 yard of what has been called the million dollar spring. EPA tested as the cleanest water in Kentucky. Which has drawn people for years. These two building are in bad condition but still standing.
We also have a large unlisted cementary on top of our hill. Some of the last names I can remember are. Hines, Gardner, Jones, Benningfield, I will post more names in full when I can get to them. The yard is in need of cleaning of brush very bad.
I would estmate at least fifty or more gravestones. The yard is in a triangle shape. Half of the sites are marked only with a stone. The other half are made of what I was told was a poured concrete headstone. There are a few with headstones and footstones. Some Just have one.
We were told this was the farm or area where the last man in Kentucky was hung for murder. A young white man named elijah Custer Gardner.
This is history that will fall to the ground and be lost forever if no one writes it down.
My wife and I are wanting to find anyone who may have gone to the school or known someone who did.
Any information on the area would be great. We plan to compile it all for the historical value.
Look at these few names. These are your kin. Lets not let them be forgot.
Thank you very much.

The large house and school are said to be dated to the late 1800s to early 1900s. They are in shambles but standing. We are looking for the name of the school or the family who lived in the house.

Anything anyone may know about the farm that the seniors I have spoke to refer to as the Leman Close farm, or Sandy Hollow, would be great.

We are at the end of Jones School Road.

Clean up of the Graveyard would be helpful. It is very overgrown.

Thank you again,

You might try myfamily.com and talk to Dee Tapp, she along with some othersare trying to restore some of the old cemeteries in the area, Elijah Custer Gardner is supposed to be buried in the Jaggers Cemetery which is on Aetna Furnace Hwy(Hwy 936) right past Bales Rd. Do you have the information on why he was hung, if not contact me and I will email you the information, its a good love triangle. I live on Aetna Furnace Hwy in the house before you get to Bales Rd, if you know where that is. Hope you find the information you are looking for.

There is a guy named Joe McCoy who lives in Hodgenville,Ky. He knows a LOT about the local history and has a lot of records and photos he keeps of the area. I am sure he could help you with any information you want. Hines, Gardner, Jones, Benningfield are old family names for the area. They have been around for a long time and many of them still are in the area. Good luck on your research, I would love to see all the information on the area written down in a book or some type records at the local court houses.

I do have information about all this....My Dad said Uncle Leamon purchased this farm from Sherman Bennette around 1952..The murder that Custer gardner comitted was at a log house on the left before you reach Uncle Leamons farm..The house obviously is no longer there...Custer was hung july 28,1904 in Munfordville ky.He was 26 years old.I have the information in every detail as he was led up to be hung. my family has the actual newspaper when this was printed in 1904.The school house was called Jones school house.there was an old house right across the creek..I assume thats the old house you are refering to...If you need any more info on this please e-mail me at [email protected]

My family owned the farm right before yours when I was a kid from 1979 to 1984 we spent our summers and any other chance we had down there I remember when your house was built a family from chicago bought the place from lehman and lived in the old farm house while the new one was being built they tore it down after I have explored that cemetary and played in the school and old house I have also fished the pond we called it lehmans pond. I have loved that place all my life and would love to own the old farm again so my family could enjoy it like my cousins and I did when we were kids glad to here most is still standing
