Big Dog...check.
Firearm...check.
House Alarm..check.
Recorded Surveillance....check

Do what you can to keep yourself safe and you should be fine. Like people here said before, it was probably drugs. Seriously, who randomly breaks into some house in Magalia looking for things of value unless its drugs or they know what the person has first hand?

Well I do not have drugs in my house and someone had tried my front door. I am so glad it was locked! I normally keep it unlock when I am home but not anymore! The weapon in the nightstand should still work, most people are in bed at 2:00 am!

Why would anyone, anywhere, at anytime ever consider leaving the door unlocked?

I've lived in lots of places that one would consider safe, and guess what, there's crime there too. I lived in the suburbs and everyone there thought it was such a "safe" neighborhood, but we would routinely hear about break-ins while people were out working in the yard and had left their garage door open.

Odds are up here in the woods, it wasn't a random break-in, but why would you let yourself become a victim of opportunity, gun or not?

This happened about 2 miles from me. well all i can say is don't come to my house i got something waiting for you. three dogs to distract you while i shoot you. knowing this country though i would probably be the one getting arrested and the intruders could sue me. gotta love this American ride.

Not to change the subject, but if you hate America so much why not leave? People emigrate all the time, if this country does not suit you, you could be one of them.

I came from the Bay Area and never had to lock my house or my vehicles. I have had my car rummaged through several times here, all they ever take is loose change. But since they smashed my neighbor's windshield to get her purse out that she forgot to take in the house, it doesn't really matter if you lock it or not. If they see something they want, they will find a way to get it. I do not consider leaving my house unlocked when I am home subjecting myself to be victimized. I have a right to leave my door unlocked and I have a right to take care of anyone who enters my house uninvited.

That is a good point Kelly, however, if you read the "armed citizen" stories of real home invasions and crimes prevented or stopped by lawfully armed citizens at the NRA website, many times the homeowner is actually able to retrieve their loaded firearm from the bedroom, turn around and start shooting the intruders. I only open my door when I'm expecting friends/family to be coming over, and if not, I'll grab my .40 and take it to the door with me. I'm so angry about continually hearing about these home invasions that actually succeed, that I'm determined to never allow it at my residence. Like many said above, it'll cost the criminal his life if he tries it where I live.
