what about all the people who use them for hog hunting, or service work? This decison by the council seems to be rash and as typical in small towns... this decision seems to be a result of old-fashion ways and lack of public education and awareness.

Come on do you really expect us to think someone uses these dogs for service work?
you know as we do the dogs are used for fighting and intimidation. I commend the city for banning them and would support any effort to have them banned in the county as well. they have proven time and time again the danger they pose and don't say only because of the way the owner handles them because they are all owned by people who do not possess the mentality to handle a dog this agressive. their owners seek out the dog for that trait. good job madisonville not let's see the county follow suit.

Only uneducated overly exposed media believers with no clue about the breed would suggest that ALL pit bulls are used for fighting or intimidation. People who generalize the motivations of pitbull owners are the typical sensationalists who don this breed with negativity and feed the hype that only thugs own them. In reality, the way an owner handles an animal of any kind will determine the behavior it exhibits. I take serious offense to saying "they are all owned by people who do not possess the mentality to handle a dog this agressive". If an owner is responsible and has done the research into the breed, knows how to raise, train, socialize and handle them, they are undoubtedly capable of owning a pit bull.

I've had friends with pit bulls as pets before they became the stereotype they are today. A sweeter, more affectionate dog I cannot imagine (except for my own Catahoula, of course.) They are STRONG, though, and what the owner needs to do is not control the temperament, but control the strength.

What Madisonville did was continue the stereotype of a breed. It should be noted that the stereotype was started by man's own actions.

I strongly agree with this law. I had a pit bull when I was in high school that I had bought at 6 weeks old. I raised her I loved her I never mistreated her, she slept in the bed with me and I took her everywhere I went. One day I came home from school and she was killing the other family dogs..... ripping them to pieces. My dad tried to stop her and she turned on him. I was screaming and she could not even hear me. She had to be shot 3 times with a 357 before she quit. This was a loving family dog and she turned in a matter of seconds. I have children now and I hate to think what would have happened if they had been there that day. I will never own another Pit. I realize other breeds can attack but they can't break every bone in your arm with one bite and they do not lock down with the amount of pressure a pit does. I have seen how easily they can change and until you witness blood smeared across your porch and the ears ripped off of your family pets....until you hear them screeching as they are ripped to pieces you can not pass judgement. Maybe you think it is ok to chance it with a child but I do not. If these people love the dog so much than they will follow the guidelines to keep it. If not....one less pit to worry about.

My problem is I have to depend on someone else to train and keep their dogs under control. Unfortunately Pit Bull owners in general have done a lousy job. You may be the worlds best dog trainer but Im not willing to take your word that your Pit Bull wont attack my kids. Id much rather err to the side of caution thank you. The strength and ferocity of the Pit Bull breed is well documented and denying that they were breed to fight and kill is ill responsible. The hoods and barrios of Houston are full of Pit Bulls. You can find all you want running loose in the streets. Come get a few and take them home with you.
