Chapter 19

Barny P.Fife sat out on Highway 7 fuming in his patrol car. He was sure as God made little green apples that Andy had stuck him out in this sh#t hole to keep him out of the action while he hogged all the glory in front of the press.

"yOUR time's coming ol'pal, you wait, just you wait and see." Barny said to himself gritting his teeth."Banard P.Fife is going places and shaking the dust of this pissant town off his shoes for good."

A bonafied murder right here in Mayberry, and here I am stuck looking for speeders on some hick back roads.

Barny hit the starter and peeled out onto the black top.

He drove down near Mayer's lake glancing at himself now and then in the mirror.

Everybody always took him as the meek little deputy following in the foot steps of good old Andy tayler like he couldn't wipe his own azz without the high sheriff there to hand him the toilet paper. That's what he wanted everyone to think. In reality he wanted those rubes to think he was a dammed lacky. Little did they know the nest egg he'd been bulding up over the years offering his services to the local moon-shiners and meth labs out in the hills,'keeping the state boys' off their trail.

A large black sadan spead passed him doing about 90. Barny hit the gas and fell in behind.

"After I'm through with you buddy,I'm taking back whats coming to me."

But as always, The best layed plans of mice and men....

Chapter 20

Javier stood in front of the County Clerks office with a blank look on his face staring through the front window looking at the tall thin man with a pencil mustash.

Howard Spregg was just finishing up the days paper work and was planing on a quiet eveining at home in front of the tv.with his mother.
He enjoyed those warm southern nights after the late news of sitting on the porch and drinking a cold sweet tea. Some people thought he was a 'moma's boy' for spending his time off with his mother, but he was always a good son and felt that it was his place to make her life more comfortable in her golden years.

The bell over the door chimed and Howard looked up from the coffe maker.

The stranger that shambled in was rather large as he had to bend slightly to enter the doorway.

"You the the county Clerk?" He asked with a low gravely voice.

Howard falted a moment and put on his best welcoming smile."Yes Howard Spregg. How may I help you sir?" He replied.

"I heard if you want to find someone your the man to talk to."

"Well we do keep records on file for land deeds and tax collection and such."

The big man edged closer to the desk "I'm looking for Ernest T.Bass.We have a privett matter to settle."

Howard backed up a little,"well I'm sorry sir,we're not allowed to give out privet information to strangers without a written letter of consent from the party involved."

The big man looked at him for a moment, than reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin.

Howard looked on and watched in confusion.

"Tell me? Have you ever played heads or tails?"

Chapter 21

How Otice fared
**********

'One is too many, and a thousand is never enough'

That's what they said down at the AA meetings Otice Camble attended down at the Elk's lodge, but a truck load of moonshine could not erase the sight that lay in a pool of blood and gore on the floor of the jail cell at his feet.

He stood there in a confused haze holding the broken jagged wiskey bottel in his hand....

He couldn't for the life of himself remember what happened to make him kill the stranger slumped on the floor, could he even do somthing like this?

Some flashes of memory came to him slowly in bits and peices, but nothing to give him a clue as to the reason he found himself in this situation.

He did remember the night before.

For over 20 years Otice Camble hadn't had nothing stonger than a glass of Ice tea.

He wanted respect for himself in the comunity. Not just a reputation as 'The town drunk'.

But sometimes our dreams of hope can turn to dust in a moment. As did his marrage. He loved his wife even tho some folks said she was ugly enough to scare Franknstine. He loved her just the same even when he soberd up and saw what he married.

The divorce papers came were deliverd and all the months of bitterness came to a head.He had rememberd stashing a bottle under the toilet tank some years ago just incase he poped it open and took a slug to steady his nerves."Just one little drink won't harm anything." He told himself...

He greedily gulped down the bitter warm liquid.
He felt the harsh aftertaste of the corn mash in his throat.

"Hello old friend."

Otice looked into the bathroom mirror to see a long forgotten image."Uncle Nat?" He asked fearfully.

"Yes it is I Otice, the large pink goat replied. Long time no see."

Otice let out a screem of shock and dashed out of the bathroom in a blind panic.
He stumbled over the coffee table and fell to the floor pissing his pants."NO!No! I got rid of you years ago! You're not real! He gasped. LeaVe me alone!"

"Now that's no way to greet an old Pal Otice after all the good times we had together." The pink goat sneered hovering closer to him.

"You'll not get me again!" Otice yelled and scrambled to his knees toward the front door.

He craweld out onto the porch forcing his way down the front steps tumbeling into the yard.

Mrs.Peterson was next door watering her prize rose bush When Otice Camble rushed out of the hedges again pissing himself moaning and growning swating at air.

"Get away from me you son of a bi#ch!" he shouted running past her.

It was a bright sunny afternoon in Mayberry, and the town was full of onlookers as Otice ran down the sidewalk trying to escape his invisable attacker without much success.

As the memories flooded back, Otice remembered he had made as far as Floyd's barber shop only to see Uncle Nat sitting on a bench out front waiting for him.

The pink goat sneered at Otice with a look of distain."Sit down and rest for a moment, you must be tired after your long jog." He mocked.

Otice's trimbled as he slumped onto the edge of the bench.Running away would never work aginst this creature,he had tried it for years. He could hide for awhile but ol'Uncle Nat would always find him in the end.

"Why...why can't you just leave me alone?" Otice whimpered pleadingly.

"Oh I don't know my inebriated friend, tis in my nature I should hazzard a guess." he replied.

You were a very notty boy to have avoided me all this time.Very notty indeed."

"You won't get me hooked no more!" Otice screamed and turned over the bench.

The court house was his only hope! A place of refuge that always brought him a moment of peace in his wiskey soaked nightmares.
The door was still unlocked as he fumbled for the knob swinging it open.

"ANDY! BARNEY! SOMEBODY HELP ME! HELP ME!" Otice bellowed pleadingly.

The courthouse was empty and the only sound was the crackel of a police scanner on Barney's desk.

A cold sweat broke out on his face and his eyes rested on the keys that always hanged on the wall between the jail cells. He ran to them like a child running to it's mother and snached them down to open the heavy iron door.
