Sorry had to answer the phone.
Yes I remember my own run ins' with him.
When I was 9 years old I was in the bathroom and some other boys were horse-playing with eachother like kids do,and the door flew open and Stevens came storming in yelling at all of us.
I told him all I was doing was using the bathroom, but he told me to shut up and take what was coming to me quote"You little bas#red!"
He took me and the boys in a class room and locked the door, pulled out a large wooden pattle with holes in it and orderd us to bend over a table.
He gave the two poor little boys 4 wacks each and orderd them to stand in the corner for the rest of the day.
(One boy peed his pants)
I was not going down like that!
I still proclaimed my innocents and he grabbed my shirt coller and thew me into some chairs and sat on me and tried to pattel me.
I jumped out an open window and got away and suspended from school.
I can't look at him without thinking of that.
That is scary and it would be especially scary, if you were in elementary school.

That is because he did not want the student to bring the attendance percentage down.

He really worked hard to get a high attendance percentage.

Well, like they say you had to be there.

This was around 79 or 80.The school system was a lot looser on what they could and could not do when it came to punnishing students.

I saw him litterly scream in some poor kid's face right in front of the teachers, and nobody took any action to stop it!

But there was one lady teacher Ms.R who did defend a student outside on the steps between the second floor.
I don't know what the kid did,but Stevens was dragging him down the hall way by his right leg,Ms.R saw it and told him to stop it,and Stevens told her to shut up and get back to class.

She really let him have it good!Told him she would report it to the school bord.
He let the kid go,but she quit a few months later.

Does anyone know why Waddill Elementary School had consistently high attendance in the high 90's or even 100% while he was principal? I think there was a reason for this. I just cannot remember how exactly this was accomplished. That is difficult to accomplish in any school especially an elementary school. Kids get sick with all sorts of childhood illnesses.

If you didn't show up at school, the next day you would really get it!

Each student was worth a lot of county funding back then.

Mr.Porter the Truent officer back then would come to your house to see if you were sick or faking.

Stevens needs to be removed from office. He does not care about anything but himself. The only time he shows any interest in the kids is when there is some personal recognition to gain. The teachers in Hopkins County have not had a raise in years, however he gets a huge raise EVERY year. Wonder how that happens??? I hold the school board accountable for this because they are the ones who keep him in office. I belive it is time that we taxpayers in Hopkins County demand that he be replaced. How he ever got into the position he is in now is beyond recognition. I have been told by a credible individual that he spends lots of time every summer on the golf course on our tax dollar. I do not believe he has the best interest of our kids in mind. I believe it is way past time for the Hopkins County Community to send the message to the Hopkins County School board that it is time to replace Stevens. We are not getting our money's worth from him and he is WAAAAAAY overpaid for what he brings to the table. We can do better. He should have retired years ago. And if the school board does not replace him, maybe they need to be replaced as well. I suspect there may be a "good ole boy" situation taking place here.

James Lee Stevens has a salary that is close to almost if not higher than the superintendent in Louisville, Kentucky. Why? The school system here isn't even close to being that large! A few of the schools here have poor test scores. The preschool programs need more funding. He doesn't budget very well. He has been in the system too long, and is afraid of change! He was never a good principal and is even worse in his current postion. I'm not judging him personally, just as a school system employee. He isn't fair, he only cares about certain students and people. The rest can just go to hell in his opinion. He is very rude, and unfriendly! I'm sure if you dig deep enough, you could find some major wrong doing during his entire tenure with the Hopkins County School System. It is not as easy as "vote" him out! Around here, it is common knowlege that if you are not part of the good ole boy's club, you are nothing! He couldn't be voted out if we tried. As long as the same folks with all of the money and power continue to run things, it will NEVER change! All of the power and wealth will continue to be passed down to the next generation. I see it everyday! People I went to school with had parents who ran everything from the school to all of the sports are now taking their parent's place! The kids who were on all of the all star teams, are now the all star coaches, and their children are now the all stars! It's just a cycle! You're either popular and rich with privileges, or you live by their rules! That's just how it is. Sad, but true. Maybe I'm the only one who will admit it or at least talk about it. You can't say much out loud, or complain in fear of retaliation against you and your family. They run everything! That's why I love John Whitfield! He speaks the truth! He isn't afraid to tell them about themselves, and call them out! Sad, but he will probably never win a big election around here because the powers that be know that if he does, their reign of terror, their power, their everything is GONE!!!!!! Stevens needs to GO!!!

I didn't even see your post before posting my reply! I agree with you 100%! Why should this man continue to receive so much money, while the teachers who do the actual work recieve so little! We have some really great teachers and principals here! He does absolutely nothing! He basks in the limelight when a student or teacher does well trying to make himself look good! He doesn't care about the students here one bit! Now, some of the folks working under him actually do care and it shows! The "good ole boy" situation has always, and will continue to be a problem here! There's no getting around if unless enough of us "little" folks stand up for what is right! It's just not that easy! It would be hard to continue to live here comfortably if you stand up against him, and he knows it! His little "you can't touch me and I know it" smirk he keeps plastered on his face tells it all! It's sad. Really, truly sad! I wish an outside agency could come in down here unexpectedly and do an audit of his entire time in the school system! I love to see what comes up!!

Corruption runs rampant in Hopkins County? It will continue to do so until the citizens get smart enough to realize that they are being taken advantage of. But no, we will coast through school, hope to pass and graduate, hope for that job in the coal mines, and let someone else deal with running a town and county government. It is no wonder they sit around and do the jobs for years, and begin to realize that no one is watching, no one is holding them accountable. We will just put our trust and tax dollars with the folks who go on to get a higher education and end up running the county and town.
Amen to that! Thing is, they all stick together!

If Hucks would offer him a position as a door man he would take it in a NY minute. He wants power! This is what is wrong with school systems in our state as one in power and has a board with no balls, he can operate any way he wants to!

I agree. The only time you see him come around is when thinks there is some notoriety in it for himself. And I do believe it is definitely the "good ole boy" club that keeps him in office, and as I stated in my previous post, I hold the school board responsible for some of this. I believe it is way past time for the tax payers in Hopkins County to take action and voice our concerns and demand that the school board take action to replace him, and if they don't take action, then maybe it's time we vote new school board members into office. Until a large population of us taxpayers take a stand, this good ole boy situation will never change. It is unacceptable in my opinion that the teachers in our county get treated the way they do and receive no raises while he continues to live high on the hog and receive huge raises each and every year. The teachers are the ones who are doing the work and touching the lives of our young ones, not the school board, superintendent etc. Something is not right with that and I think an outside suprise audit would be in order. It's our tax money, we have the right to know where it's going and why. The school board and administration work for US, the taxpayer and they need to be reminded of that instead of sitting in their ivory towers acting like untouchable demigods. And speaking of the school board administration, it is huge in regards to the number of employees compared to the rest of the school boards in our state. Why do we need so many in comparison to other school systems in the state of our size? This in itself is mismanagemet of our tax funds.
