TN is great, especially Knoxville and Nashville, I would recommend to anyone, that given the oppurtunity, move here.
If I had to move there, I wouldn't object. Only been to Nashville once, and that was an overnight on the way to New Orleans. 1991, stayed at the Ramada Inn South. My room looked over a rail yard.

Not to bad mouth my state. The farther north you go, the better it gets. And everyone should do the Mackinac Bridge crossing at least once.

The Wire was a police drama on HBO that centered mostly (though not exclusively) on West Baltimore. Blockbuster, Netflix, or HBO on Demand are sources for this show. Highly recommended.
Justified is a current FX show about a US Marshall who is sent home to Eastern Kentucky. If you have FX, you can see it at 10PM Eastern on Wednesdays. Also highly recommended.
i have never missed an episode of "justified" yet. great series.

I dunno. There is humor in it, just like there is humor in Hunter Thompson's book about the Hells's Angels. But you see enough about their day to day lives to realize that it is kind of a tragedy. To me, the Whites aren't victims, they just do what they do and deal with the fallout. Maybe that's all they want. Either way, it's a part of America people don't often get to see. I guess the irony is that most people who live that life have no interest in it being seen.
I agree with you (Represenative too)
They aren't victims by no means, but the Children are. I am actually surprised CPS/Social Services have not been flooded with calls since the release of the film.

Well. they said they had over 500 hours of footage.
I live in madison and watched them film on and off over a few months.
Some of it was interesting.most of it was foolish.
The funny thing was they would talk to production crew would talk to the cops when something drug related or idiotic would happen and they would use the defense "u need to give em a break. they are the last of the mountain dancers.you are interrupting your cultural heritage."
Nobody in the room believed it . but it made for good press.
Storm was a great guy.Seemed to get things done.
Especially when jesco spent a few days in jail. They were Johnny on the spot getting him out.

You serious, that's what the cops said about them? Where did you hear this?

To all you folks who haven't been here. Come on down! It IS beautiful, and the people are generally nice and friendly. We have tons of cabins you can rent, and there's white water rafting and these unbelievable zip lines that run in the New River Gorge way over the trees.

But we have such a bad reputation people are afraid to come here.

And as far as every state having their fair share of hillbillies - that much is true. However, you are not stereotyped the way we are and you do not live under a mantle of ridicule for being backward, uneducated and inbred. Hell, we even have our own monster movie franchise - Wrong Turn. "Inbred West Virginia hillbillies attack and terrorize lost teens in this gripping slasher movie.. " It's very painful for us, it is for me anyway. Whenever the national news media comes here, I just cringe because I know what they are going to do. We call it the "coon hide nailed to a barn door" syndrome. The media bypasses any "normal" looking person until they finally find somebody who has a barn door with a coon hide nailed to it and they whip out their cameras. And so many people are happy to lay it on thick. They really play to the cameras. It never fails.

But really, think about coming here. It is beautiful. I've never known anyone who didn't think so.

Bah, my bad. ;)

But still, WV is beautiful country and would love to visit one day, for sure. Even good ole Boone county, the home of Daniel Boone.

Ladybug,

Daniel Boone is now rolling over in his grave at that one.

You should visit W.Va. but Boone Co. is not beautiful country. Southwestern West Virginia is not pretty country.

The prettiest country in the State is in the southeastern counties - Summers, Greenbrier, Monroe, Fayette, Raleigh. You want to head to the New River Gorge area if you want to see real beauty. The northeastern areas are also beautiful - Pocahontas Co. is simply spectacular.

I would completely bypass coal country. They are down there destroying every GD inch of it rooting out coal and it's a tragedy of immense proportions furthered by stooges for the big coal companies - "Friends of Coal" they call themselves.

Cranberry Glades, Timberline, and New River Gorge, are 3 of my favorite places, mostly because I spent quite a bit of time there as a kid, but also because they are beautiful.
Just avoid the cities, Especially Huntington and to a lesser extent Charleston.

Huntington is now referred to as 'little detroit' because of the MI drug dealers who've moved in. It's a dangerous place to be, especially the east end.

I just watched the film about the White's yesterday. It made me very sad and disgusted. I, too, wonder how these people can keep custody of any child after the release of this film. CPS has documented proof so why aren't they acting on it? I wondered when watching the film if the film crew didn't show hospital administration what they had just filmed...that pill whore snorting up while her newborn was a few feet away.

The White's lifestyle is not unique for WV by any stretch of the imagination. I don't live in WV but my inlaws all live in mingo county. It's the trashiest hellhole I've ever been to. WV is not beautiful by any means because it's littered with trashy run-down trailers and trashy run-down people. The good people are pulled down with the rest as collateral damage.

That movie reminded me so much of my inlaws I was just repulsed. They're the same. They all want and get that SSI check so they can lie around and do nothing but get high. Them, along with their spouses and their spouses' families. They pick up their pills at the first of the month and sell half of them and snort the rest within a couple of days. Rehabs and jail cells are a way of life. They've figured out that if someone in the family draws a legitimate SS disability check (not SSI), they'll get the check amount increased by 50% if they have dependent children so they've actually signed custody of their children over to family members who get SSD.

My spouse and I have spent thousands trying to help them to straighten up and make better lives for themselves. They don't want better. They live in dumps and are perfectly happy snorting their pills and staying messed up and drunk. They just buried the 3rd member of their family to die from drugs in recent years. I wish they'd have one big pill-snorting party and finish everyone off at one whack. They disgust me and I'm fresh out of compassion for any of the unappreciative losers.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have relatives in Princeton, play around Summersville every summer, been to Spruce Knob and the rest of the pretty areas in the east but the southwest part of WV is also great if you're an outdoors-type person. Hunting, fishing, camping ... I've done it all in WV and ended up marrying a girl from northern WV. We go back regularly and I cut loose in the mountains every year. Yes, it's a shame what the coal companies have done to the state, its waters and land, but WV really is a beautiful state, southwest included.

I am from Louisa Kentucky, and my whole entire life I've lived close enough to Ft.Gay West Virginia to throw a rock to the Wild Cat Tavern. I watched "The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" last night and thought it was truly epic. True they live a very wild lifestyle and they're quite violent and the footage of the kids around drug use and the language that was used in front of the children was a bit hard to stomach being a mother, but this stuff isn't just reserved for the whites of Madison, WV this is everywhere. You can come to Eastern, KY and see this type of thing going on everyday. I KNOW people like this personally myself. And you can go to California,New York, Pennsylvania, ect. and find folks just like this. I understand the upset the residents of Boone County and West Virginia in general must feel, embarassed that this is the thing people that watch this flick are going to think of them. But it shows true heart, they are a rough and rowdy bunch, but it shows a real side that people of the south possess that other parts of the country do not.

Everybody has their problems it doesnt mean they are bad people. The one girl that had her baby taking away went to rehab and I think that is wonderful. People should stop bad mouthing people they do not know. Look at your own lives I'm sure there are things you have done wrong. WV is beautiful and so are the people who live there. And I think the whites would be just as nice if u actually met them in person. There probably alot nicer than the people on her making rude insulting remarks about people instead of giving them words of encouragement. They have feelings just like the rest of us.
