Nonunion got 29 good men kill for what for profit. That is what he wants to work for. I wish that some of these nonunion miner could go into a good safe mines runed by the UMWA. They would never want to leave once they seen how safety is first. One good example, is BLACK OAK A PATRIOT MINES THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR MEN AND ONE DROP OF COAL WITH BLOOD ON IS NOT AS WORTH A MANS LIVE. if that every was a show mines black oak is one . All company should be made to come and look at this mines .

Maybe there is hope for the union after all. It looks like the majority on this forum are for the union. Maybe the sad disaster of losing 29 lives and destroying the families could result in safer mines. The only way to get safe mines is to have the union backing you. Miners will never have a voice to speak up without fear of losing their jobs without the union. Miners must be allowed to vote in secrecy to join without fear of their nonunion employer finding out how they voted. Good luck.

Union coal must be why Patriot Coal operates more non union mines than union. I guess someone has to mine coal to make up for the union mines.

If you guys are serious about Unionizing! here are a few tips that will help you get the ball rolling .. Good LUCK... This is the first step. Do many of you share the same concerns? Determine your top five or so issues. Is there a common theme such as lack of respect and dignity; no input with management; unfair, arbitrary treatment or favoritism. Are wages and benefits lower at your workplace than what workers are getting in similar jobs in your industry? Write them up on a list.

When talking among yourself about a union, be sure to talk only while you are on breaks, away from work areas, or off company property. Organizing a union is legal and a protected right under the law, but you need to avoid tipping off management as long as possible. If your employer finds out, especially when you are in the beginning stages of identifying key workplace issues and building union support, your road to success will be much more difficult...Building a committee. After determining support for a union exists around key workplace issues, build a committee of co-workers that is representative of your workplace. Building a strong inside organizing committee is critical to building the majority support that you will need to establish your union..Ideally, the number of workers on your committee should be at least 10 percent of the workforce. During this stage, UMW will give you tips on building majority union support.

I guess you like working from companies that treat you like dogs. One of these day we will watch the nonunion mine do their working miner like, they do in China coal mines went one is kill in the mines they put their body on the rib and keep on working until there shift over, then they will take the dead worker out. That is why you need a union to protect your family and the miner rights for a safe workplace. GIVE BACK RESPECT THAT MINER SHOULD HAVE FOR THE DANGEROUS JOB THEY DO!

I support coal and I support union. But I get kinda tired of hearing to 'thank a coalminer for your lights, your computer, etc'. As if it weren't for coal we would all be sitting in the dark.
I DON"T THINK SO !!
There are other sources of energy out there. FYI -coal is not a renewable energy source. It will run out. There is solar energy, nuclear energy, wind energy. If coal dissappeared tomorrow, we would not be in the dark. Oh, I forgot, we have AEP, the power goes out when the wind blows or some fool decides to steal cable so he can buy his drugs. Nonunion coal miners should be thanking the union miners for their high wages because if not for the union, they would be working at the mercy of the company like the above post referred to working conditions in China. When coal begins to cost more than other energy sources, coal will be replaced with another source of energy.

I think miners should always be allowed to keep their unions, because honestly the way the government doesn't work well enough to be solely responsible for such things. But I don't always agree that the union is always acting fairly, both for it's members and towards coal companies. Some things are essential to a miners safety and performance, but not everything they ask for always is.

I agree, the Union is essential, but Cecil Roberts is one of the biggest crooks to ever come down the pike. I remember what he did to hundreds of us in the 88 coal strike, and many of us lost all our retirement, medical, and seniority rights when he sold out to teflon Don. You better watch him, he's a beech nut, he has a face on every side.

You gotta' have intestinal fortitude to show the Co you work for that you mean business. You all may talk about organizing a union but if there is a lack of initiative it will never happen. Good luck

Too little too late!
You guys should have thought about all this before you let all the scab outfits come in here. You didn't want to stick together and keep them out, and now they've infested the entire region. It's all of your faults for it happening. You elect union leaders who don't anymore care about the union mines anymore, it's yourselves to blame. I'm not a coal miner btw, but I do remember when the local union leaders here in Boone County warned all of you this would happen. Well, they were right and look at the mess we're left with.
