Lula We LOVE the photo of the frame building built on what is NOW an empty parking lot. Notice the old 2 story house down the street, long since lost to development or the elements. I was also told the other day that farmers would trade cotton "seed" for housewares in the In High Cotton building, and behind the a frame type structure there was dynamite stored for sale to pond builders and the like! The building on the other side of In High Cotton (the east side) was also the home to Farmer's Hardware. I believe that building is where they began their giftier selection of goods. Please send more photos if you have them. Do you have any of the Laughing Moon building...183 S. main formerly the Belmont Hotel and later Thrifty mac Drugs? Any pics of Porter Street particularly 364?

The 2 story house was the "Hardy House" mentioned in the Oliver Hardy marker in front of the old Sinclair station (the Madison Museum of Art). It was later the Aliston House and then the White House. Demolished in the 1970s for a mini strip mall now, of course, part of Town Park. It sat just right of the Jefferson Street main gate into the park. I do have a picture from the same year of the house that is Helens Beauty Parlor which shows the back of Laughing Moon.

I'd be interested in seeing ANY old pics of Madison. I spent a couple of days at the Georgia Archives in Atlanta 10 years ago or so, but was unable to find anything on the Laughing Moon bldg or anything on POrter Street. Are your pics for the maps mainly commercial district?
