Has anyone gotten into these tunnels? They go from the old Sanatorium all the way under Macon and lead to the basements and crawl spaces under some houses in Macon. My mother got into them as a child and saw that the part under Lakeveiw Towers had padded room with chains an claw marks. If you know where there is an opening to the tunnels please let me know, I am writing a book and want to get in them. Thanks in advance.

There is only a tunnel from the Sanatorium to the Coal room right behind the main building. I've heard those stories before, I think thats all they are. Just stories......

When I was a kid back in the 60's There was a house that was pretty close to the catholic school and I can remember friends of mine talking about getting in that tunnel and going for miles. They didnt say where it led them but alot of the kids back then would go down there and smoke cigaretts and drink I guess it was pretty cool.

Pruit I went to ICS from 1960 to 1967. Do you mean the house behind the school across the alley? It was latter purchased by a lawyer so he coudld be close to the courts. I think that the tunnel may have gone to the court house to

Yes I believe that was the house I just remember the kids talking about going down there and drinking moonshine and smoking cigaretts when I was a kid.

Little Momma.

You might also try the basement of the old Mattingly Bros Store downtown. I think it is the Ben Franklins now. Back in the 60's my dad managed teh Mattingly's and he said that there were some interesting doorways and stairs leading out of the building down in the basement.

He found some old tin cups, plates and some dried up old chicken bones in one of them and he thought that they might have been used as a safe location to hide and move slaves in the civil war to keep them away from the conferates as they traveled to safety.

He never went all the way to the end of the tunnels. He said that he only walked abuot 100-150 feet in them. So we cannot asy where they eneded up. You might look into the property archives to see who was the land owner of the land that the Mattinglys/Ben Franklin is on.

Good luck and get a good flashlight and let nme know waht you find out.

Thanks

I spoke with a guy the other day about the tunnels under macon and he to grew up in macon and he said he could remember playing in them as a kid. He said one day he and one of his friends found a big crock down there and they packed it out and his friends mom kept potatoes in it for years. I dont know if they still have the old crock or not but its probably worth a fortune now.

I know that there are old tunnels under town that are sewers. Some are 6' high and are brick lined, but are to transport sewage from the older part of town. They used to discharge directly to Sewer Creek, hence the name.

LM:

You need to go hide in the back room of one of the stores connected to the tunnell system. And then when the store closes and the employees go home you will have open access to the tunnell network. Make sure you take a backpack with some water, snacks and a good flashlight with spare batteries.

That may be the best way for you to get access. I am pretty sure you could use that plan and hide in the back room of the Old Mattingly Bros store. That store has access to the tunnels I know!! I talked to my dad at Thanksgiving and he told me about some of the dark passage ways he found in the basement of that store when he was manager back in the 60's. He walked a few hundred feet into one of then but stopped because he was wearing a white shirt and tie and did not want to get it stained.

Good luck, haev fun and keep us all posted.
