Theses are the same people that threatened to move their event if Long Beach passed a reasonable spay and neuter law. Because of them millions of shelter dogs and cats will be put to death this year alone
I wish they would take their ridiculous creations somewhere else. We don't need these kinds of heartless people in LB. I would rather we rented the Convention Center to the KKK. At least they are honest about their prejudice.

The original spay and neuter law was not reasonable in that it required purebreds to be neutered, which meant they could not show in California. I dont know if the law has been rewritten yet but obviously something happened to allow them to have the show here. This group does a lot of work in the field of rescue dogs and therapy dogs. Not just show dogs. Compareing any well meaning group to the evil KKK is just irresponsible.

It was such a fun event and I hope they continue to come back to Long Beach every year.

Mike,
Good thing you don't have to live here. Please focus your efforts on your own town, it needs the help.

What do you have against shelter dogs? Are you friends with Michael Vick?

This is the biggest event of its type possibly in the world.

It wasn't a local spay bill that was an issue, it was a statewide bill that Long Beach representatives at first said that they were abstain from then, If i remember right, several of them ended up voting with the bill, even after the constant lobbying from the AKC.

AKC threaten to move the event to Vegas where, believe it or not, they don't threaten to take your balls unless you do business with the wrong people.

There are very few "open to the public" events left at the Convention Center, this event is as big as the Grand Prix, spectacle-wise, and was a nice shot of activity in downtown and the local economy, which include my wallet.

Long Beach is a big dog town, and our wonderful representatives, of which somehow get elected, failed to acknowledge that, if they were at the very least honest to their first promise of being abstain. That whole debacle wouldn't of happened.

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship is contracted for a 2010 show in Long Beach up till 2012, I believe. Let get a pool going on the different ways Long Beach can screw it up in the mean time.

I got 20 bucks on the infestation of the Unite Here and other movements taking over the local hotels, and Long Beach Officials welcoming them with open arms.

Shelter dogs are the best. I have a shelter dog. She is spayed because it is required that no dogs be adopted from the shelter unless they are spayed or neutered. Not even the pedigrees. I had heard some people state that sheltered dogs are different because they know they have been rescued. I didnt really believe it until I adopted mine. Now I would not get a dog any other way.
Adopt. Dont buy from a pet store.

You are completely INCORRECT that the original Spay and Neuter bill required purebreds to be neutered. ANYONE could pay a small fee and breed any animal they wanted. What it DID do was threaten to take power and money away from garage breeders-which is what these people mostly are. They used their MONEY and clout to get the bill killed. They threatened to move their event out of the city if LB moved forward with the bill. I would rather see them go-and ANYONE else-even the KKK here instead. At least the KKK is not responsible for dead shelter animals!

Idiots who want to breed their pets so that their brats can see “the miracle of life” should first take their kids to watch an afternoon of watching abandoned and unwanted of dogs and cats being killed.(They are not “put to sleep”, by the way—they are killed)
After a few hours of watching “The miracle of Death” they would soon change their minds.
Shelter dogs continue to fill the shelters-and to die there. Who needs people like this in town?

Also-we should never forget what these idiots did to the German Sheppard. They thought that the hips would look cool if they sloped below the dogs shoulders. OOPS! Can you say “Dysplasia”?

My brother's German Shepherd had to be put down when he was only eight years old because he could no longer stand. He would lean up against me to take the weight off his hip. It was the most difficult thing I ever had to do when we took that last trip to the vet. People need to stop and think about what they are doing to these wonderful animals. The mutilation of the Doberman is another terrible that the animal rights people are trying to stop but the AKC insists that their tails and ears be cropped. There is no reason for that to be done.

Maybe I am the only one, but I am getting a bit tired of the dog show being front page EVERY day! There are so much more important things going on in this world that should be up front. Nice to see the story once or twice, but every day on page one makes no sense.

You wont have to worry about that for next year. According to the final story on the show in the PT this am, they are moving to Florida. Another failure for Foster and his cronies?

I love dogs. I have 2 mixed breed dogs, one from a shelter and one adopted from a rescue. I have also had a purebred dog. I bought him from a breeder who was in the breed for 30 years. Nothing is wrong with purebred dogs. What is wrong is that backyard breeders think they can make a buck raising dogs when they really don't know anything about genetics, which is the most important element to breeding dogs or any animal for that matter.
I know there are registered breeds that are in my opinion "poorly engineered". Showing dogs are mostly for the public's benefit. I believe dogs need to be functional as well. Health and movement should always be ranked over beauty. People need to realize that mixed breeds are no more healthier than purebreds. If bad breeding stock is used, the danger of passing down the genetic faults are going to be greater. The AKC does however need to address the breeds which are bred poorly. Bulldogs, Pekineese, Chow Chows and German Shepherds are just a few that come to mind in needing help.
As for dog shows, I like to go. People can see the breeds they like. There does however need to be more regulation on breeding but more so on the responsibility of the breeders. This will keep the backyard breeders out of the sport and maybe keep the unwanted dog population down.
