Does anyone remember Shaker Day Camp, which was out on Old Mill Road? I attended each summer from 1968-1975, and have such wonderful memories of riding, swimming in Waterfall Lake, and arts and crafts up in the old house. The day camp ran from at least the early 1960's, and maybe earlier.

The place was owned by the Moritz family; a grandfather and his son, Gibson. I was good friends with Mandee Moritz, but I have not seen her since around 1984. The last time I saw the property in about 2004, it was a tree farm with many of the original buildings still there.

Does anyone know what became of the park, and where I might find memorbilia? I fervently hope it didn't become yet another sterile development or office building complex.

Thank you,
Anne

I went to Shaker Day camp around 1962 and 1963,
they had the lake, a lot of woods, the pool
building, stables near the Moritz Home, the arts
and craft building, a kitchen/dining building.
In the woods North of the lake was an old
decaying house in the woods. Southeast of the
lake, East of the Moritz home and stables there
was a little creek and waterfall, where i would
catch crayfish. You can use google maps to zoom
in on an aerial view of the property, on
Old Mill Rd, northwest of I-480. The waterfall
near the Moritz home is hard to see through the
trees, the current view of the lake looks like it
has been drained....
I can't seem to find out much about the old camp
either, but it may have fallen victim to insurance
costs and a highly litigious society we now enjoy....

Ohhhh yes, I remember that place...I went there for a couple of years in 1974 and 1975. My neighbor buddies and I used to pile into his mom's old VW bus and she'd drive us all out there. Didn't expect to find others with similar memories, but I knew there had to be others out there...

That's funny! I'm 45 years old now and I went there from around 1970 - 1975. I live out in the Twinsburg area now and a few months ago I asked my cousin about Shaker Day Camp since he went there in the later 70's. He told me it was off of Old Mill Rd., so I passed by there once on my way to work. There now a sign that says "The Brown Farm" but I'm not sure if I was at the correct address. I would love to go back there and check it out now!

I used to camp and work at SDC. I was on the riding staff and even lived across the street. The property has been purchased by a lawyer who has trashed it completely. Tried to visit last month when home for a funeral and it was blocked off with cheap cans and no tresspassing signs

Our whole family went to Shaker Day Camp in the 50's. My mom worked there. She is JANE WHITTEMORE, AND MY SISTERS JACKIE AND MEG AND I WENT THERE. I VISITED THE PLACE IN 2007, THERE WAS A NO TRESPASSING SIGN BUT I DROVE ON ANYWAYS, THE CAFETERIA WAS STILL THERE BUT THE LAKE HAD BEEN DRAINED. I LOOKED AROUND FOR ABOUT A HALF HOUR AND THEN LEFT, NEVER SAW ANYONE, I CHECKED WITH THE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR WHO TOLD ME THE MAN THAT OWNED IT NOW WAS QUITE A LONER AN DIDNT LIKE PEOPLE COMING AROUND.

I was a councelor/leader and bus driver from 1964 to 1972. I ran into Gib Moritz once back in the late 80's in Rocky River. The Google Earth view looks like the lake has been drained. Didn't make much money but I sure had fun! I drove a VW van when I was 18 and moved up to a 1952 Dodge school bus, what a beast that was!

I was there in 1954- 1955. Marge Jackson from Hudson was the camp nurse. I have pictures of the camp that my parents took of me at the lake, of the crafts-dining hall building and the lake. Also several picures of me riding Domino around the horse arena, which was up along Old Mill Road.

I began working as a councilor and bus driver during the summer of 1949. I was joined by my mother, Marion Bacon and my two sisters, Joanne and Diane, who also became councilors in 1950. We continued to work there during the summers through 1951. The camp was a beautiful facility, and a fantastic place to work, although the pay was low. There was swimming, horseback riding, hiking, baseball and any other events the councilors could dream up to keep it interesting. I learned how to drive an array of old school buses and, one summer did the Akron route in Coach Moritz's Ford "woody" station wagon, which I was allowed to keep at home.

I was there for 2 or 3 years in the late 50's. I remember one rainy day seeing a movie in the house about the horrors of nuclear war! Most of it wasn't like that, though. There was a counselor named Bob Nichols who told great ghost stories at the old house that we called Arrowhead. One of the Bellamy siblings (Fred, Constance, and....the other girl) was always on the bus with us, including on the last day, when the bus would stop for doughnuts even though "Coachie wouldn't approve"!

Strawberry shortcake, huckleberry pie
V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!
Are we with it?
Well, I guess!
Shaker Day Camp is the best!
YAAAAAAAY!

My Paternal Grandfather and Grandmother started SDC in the midst of the Great Depression in 1932, the first year on the Old Mill Rd. grounds. For several years prior to that, "Coach" ran it from the Shaker Heights school system and used their facilities to get started, as he was the "Phys Ed" director. I have so many wonderful memories of the first seven years of my life on that property. Really neat to read these posts! My father "Gib" was in Ohio City and did business there and Rocky River for many years and has retired to Portugal, of all places... I will check back and would be happy to try answering questions...Also will check out the Facebook page!

Jonray...Those are around the years I was there. Went 2 weeks one year and the next year my father was a counselor so I went all summer. Marge Jackson was the nurse and used to drive us from Hudson. BTW, my daughter lives in the Natomas area and teaches at Westfield Elementary School on Poplar Ave. in West Sac. Visit often and love the city and area.

I went to Shaker Day Camp during the summers of 55, 56, 57, and 58. I didn't remember the owner's name, but recall everyone calling him "Coach". Always friendly, I remember him mowing the grass with his Farmall cub.
Odd that I don't remember any campers or counselors names, but do remember three horses. My favorite was Comanche, but he was gone in 1958, too wild I heard. In 58 my new favorite was Madrid and recall winning a blue ribbon for some event. Then there was a little brown and white pony named Skippy who sometimes had a bad temper and kicked.
Curiously, I remember all his buses. He had mostly late 40s and early 50s Chevy Loadmasters, but had one late 40s K series International, and a 40s REO. My favorite was a White that didn't run in any of the years I was there.
The highlight of Coach's day seemed to be when he stood in front of the loaded buses at the end of the day and pointed at the buses to signal the exit sequence.

I spent 5 summers at the camp (1968-73)as a camper and 2 more as a counselor. Those were great years!!! I remember Mandee and Gib Jr. I can still smell the spice bush that lined the trail by the waterfall and the hay in the hay loft. I did barn crew for several years and we would always get caught sneaking up to the hayloft!! ;)
Would love to talk to Tammy or Tracy McDonald again!
So sad it didn't exist for my kids!
