How sad!! I am a Forrest High Alum (1985) and I know the school has changed A LOT in that time. I just hate to see such turmoil associated with my alma mater...

I have the prefect plan;
Step One change the name to Barrack Obama Sr. High.
Step Two, if the schools state grade does not improve, if the average SAT scores fails to improve and the graduation rate does not improve after fours years then change the name back. It will have been proven that the school name does not matter when it comes obtaining an education.

If the scores do improve substantially then change all schools to Barrack Obama, because if it works once try it everywhere.

I really wish they would change it to "Michael Scott Speicher High School". I think it will be a good compromise.

I am so tired of stuff like this, now if it was named Martin Luther King High, and they wanted to change it to a white mans name, all hell would break loose!

The school board has voted. They are not likely to unshoot their foot. The board is removing the Forrest name. But that shouldn't be directed to include elimination of the history of Forrest High the school. The action to change the name of Forrest High is a direct disrespect of the thousands of graduates, the 55 year proud history of the school, and hundreds of dedicated teachers and staff; unless the board takes additional action to compile an accurate history with the associated memorabilia and erect a lasting memorial. Board resistance to do this not only indicates and direct disrespect of NBF graduates, but also that the board and superintendent was motivated by racial purposes for the absolute elimination of the Forrest name. One member of the school board acknowledged this distinction by having expressed the name change is not intended to be a disrespect of the graduates of NBF. For almost all the NBF alumni the feelings, indeed the perceptions are otherwise. Some do believe the time has come for the name to change. Virtually all NBF alumni believe it was done in an underhanded manner and with the intent to also eliminate the history of the school and the accomplishments of the NBF alumni, teachers, and staff.

The board's claim they are not disrespecting the NBF alumni and history, will only become believable when the board takes action to create a lasting memorial to the 55 years this school created alumni, and manifested a proud culture of achievement among teachers, staff, and students

The entire cost to change the name of N.B. Forrest High School should be borne by contributions, perhaps from the ones who pushed so hard to bring about the name change. It was the superintendent, Dr. Vitti, that spoke before the vote that he had interested donors to off set the costs. Days after the vote, when the new name was announced, no serious donor stepped forward, and it was Dr. Vitti that said the cost of the name change would be made using school district funds. It should be NOTED, it doesn't matter if these funds come from construction, building maintenance, or teacher pay, the funds are public tax dollars and should not be used in a wasteful and capricious manner. We should all remember how this board and superintendent are using tax dollars for a name change when they announce they must have more money.
