Positive: Golf, year around, variety of tracks, reasonable greens fees and did I mention year around.

Positive: The beaches and all the scenery that comes will it, of course sometimes that can be negative, you know beached whales.

Negative: Local weather persons this time of year talking about hurricanes and the cone of death and destruction. They assume the majority of residents are too stupid to know what to do if a hurricane ever hits.

Oh, I could come up whole list of things, positive and negative, but I didn’t want to hog the thread. I know that we have at least a half of dozen posters who will list all the negatives. I live in a nice community on the Westside that is very peaceful and quite. We don’t take to kindly to crime and we don’t abide to the, don’t snitch BS.

Positive: If you're a football fan, Jacksonville is one of the only cities in the U.S. that you can immediately and affordably buy season tickets. And it's the only city in which you can do that and watch a perrinially winning team.

Positive: Cost of living is low, although I don't know how it compares to Reno.

Positive: The local housing market is saturated with every type of home you could want to buy.

Positive: There is no state income tax.

Positive: It's not nearly as cold as northern Nevada.

Negative: There is still a huge Baptist influence on city government and as such, Jacksonville is not as progressive as it should be. The sum result is that a lot of city resources are diverted to spit shine the surface of the city (nude dancing ordinances, hotel-hooker stings, porn shop raids) while our violent crime rate remains highest in the state and many of our schools are receiving failing evaluations.

Negative: Property taxes in Florida are insane.

Negative: Jax international isn't a large airline hub so it's more expensive to take weekend jaunts from Jax than from many other cities. It's probably still a bit cheaper than getting in and out of Reno though.

Huge Negative: There are very few karaoke bars in Jacksonville.

I moved here by default to be honest, hubby was serving out to his retirement here in Jax after being stationed in the UK........as a town its not too bad, but very very VERY sprawling for me one of the plus sides to the down turn in the economey is that the ripping up of the greenery and throwing up houses has slowed down, but even in the 3 years I have been here I have seen some lovely areas of trees etc ripped down to throw up something NOT needed.
Work I think is still here to be had but you MUST have marketable skills.
I dont like the fact that to get any place at all you have to drive, nothing where I live [which for the most part is nice and safe]is within walking distance.
IF you are bringing a family you MUST do your research on the schools ie aim to be in the CLAY school system and NOT duval.
I personally find the heat / humidity somewhat over the top most of the year and like already mentioned the local stations go into warp overdrive once hurricane season hits.
Have to ask [if you dont mind] but what are your REASONS for moving here???

Primarily motivations would be soul searching and romance, but ultimately sinister and self serving... A change, Reno is a very transient city and developing any type of relationship where trust is a bond is difficult, I was looking to move closer to my son who is in Louisiana, but I dont want to live there. I like the fact of zero state income tax and am currently researching other potential economic positives and negatives. But ultimately... another visit to Florida is due, only this times further north, and Jacksonville seems to find my heart. The elements of weather doesnt concern me but I am not ignorant of its possibilities. As far as the entertainment of sports and puritan baptist fanaticism, they both are appealing on multiple levels.. And as an advocate against offshore drilling in Florida, I think living in Florida as a constituent will validate my concerns and have a stronger impact with the "powers that be".(Plus its a shorter distance to travel when I need to sabotage offshore drilling rigs or actively participate in the political arena of dissent )..~lol~

edensap, well to be honest IMO the whole of the USA is very transient but Jax is pretty high up there, remember we have a lot of military coming and going, one of the few malls we do have IMO is now all but a no go zone........anyone else been to regency mall lately what a dump with any decent shops hauling azz the MOMENT their lease is up.......... the people that I have met are pretty nice for the most part.
Either way I really think ANY place is what YOU make it.

just so you know. jacksonville (suckersville) is quickly becoming known around the rest of the country as the "screw you city".

the city sucks, city government sucks and the people suck. the people are becoming more rude, violent, dishonest & inconsiderate than any new yorker.

to be honest, jax has one of the highest murder rates in the nation now. it is not a proud claim to fame, but you need to know the truth. Jax isn't all bad, but it is still a big small town if you know what I mean. public transportation is laughable (if you're used to or looking for that kind of thing). the skyway express (downtown above-ground subway) is am embarassment and goes 4 blocks, I think. It is Jacksonville's above-ground pool of subway systems. i guess the cost of living is pretty low. the drivers are retards. there is always construction on a business roadway, usually containing a merging lane to a draw bridge. hey, but there are plenty of bridges and you can often see sail boats while you're waiting to cross the river to go to work :)

I totally agree, although a military base and a gambling hub are two different types of transiences. I really think your right, ANY place is what YOU make it.

Thanks for your input, you have helped greatly!

Stay where you are at because our Cops here are No-where near as funny as the Reno Police department.
Our guys and gals at the JSO don't wear those nice short-shorts either.

Seriously, have you ever been here in Summer?
Compared to the nice dry air where you're at we like to drink our air here.
It can get very very sticky!
I think New Orleans is the only place I've been with more consistent high humidity days.
If you don't mind that then it is Beautiful!

I just love the law. And I made a point to know it too.

No plea bargain ever for me, no guilty plea on a lesser charge if I am innocent. Better tried by 12 than hung out by 1, Bad attorney... represent yourself or have the judge appoint another. Judges can be removed from the proceedings or the bench.(Even in lil ole Florida)... Go back to Vegas, and stay out of trouble, choose your friends wisely. Don't pay the restitution, go back to jail...at least you know where you stand there. Not even Florida can place you in prison for being poor...file bancruptcy). Paupers prisons dont exist.(But if they want you as bad as you make it sound, they'll catch you doing something else stupid 3rd class felony or not). So you plea bargained, so I know you didnt commit a third class felony, what was the original charge? And that must of been what you done.
