Murray is getting rediculous.. without murray state students this town would be nothing. It would be a ghost town. As a student I can't VOTE in this city so I shouldnt be required to pay 50 dollars for a stupid city sticker! Not to mention I already have to pay tuition, parking pass, and books. Murray students bring more revenue to this town then the residents do. Murray ky isnt on my license which means its not my permanent address. I give back to the city of murray when I buy groceries, gas, and alcohol. I pay taxes in the town that I permantely resign so why should I have to pay extra for a town I dont live permantely in? The only people that are happy to pay are the people that aren't murray students and people that actually live here and have lived here since birth

I wasn't born here. I went to MSU and after finishing got a job here and a few years later started a family. I am happy about you having to buy a city sticker.
You use my roads. My police keep your punk ass safe. My city allows you a place to drink. So you will pay your share of taxes. Don't like it? Leave. MSU accounts for less than 35% of the local Economy. Even that is in waves. Move in and move out. Everything in the middle is forgettable.
Deal with it. You are damn luckly to pay so little in taxes.
Wait until you get a real job. You travel to another state for a weekend and have to pay city and state taxes for a weekends work!

You would be paying a lot more in almost any other college town in Kentucky, parking passes are a lot more expensive and payroll taxes that students have to pay are substantially more costly in other towns.

You actually have it pretty good, and just don't realize it.

Actually, no, noone is happy to pay the city sticker tax, but some are grateful that they aren't paying a 1% payroll tax, which may not mean much to a student or anyone making less than $5,000 a year, but can cost a working family a lot of money that they would then not be able to spend on "groceries, gas, and alcohol".

The gas prices in Murray are usually higher than anywhere else around this area and that affects all of us, not just students. Also if you aren't working in town, I think the students get a discount on the city sticker and I also think you can get an ok to vote here and only here if you are a student but a person can check that out. Of course, if that's true, then you shouldn't vote in your home town.

Just looked at Murray web site and it doesn't say anything about a discount for students but I'm sure I saw something in the Ledger about it one time that they did. Just don't believe everything you see on a web site, most aren't kept up to date.

Being a student really has nothing to do with it. The law is very loose in regard to residency requirements. The requirement for residency for voting purposes is just living here for 60 days. Some folks during the alcohol debate got bent out of shape because of the impermanent nature of the student's residency, but they are no different than someone who comes in to work at the factories for a couple of years and then move on.

You can only be registered in one place, registering in one place nullifies the other.

It does and it doesn't. There are people in this country that will vote in two different places, not suppose to but it happens.

Up to 2012, if a student didn't work in the city, they were exempt from the city sticker but this was in the Ledger dated 3-31-12.
. If a student does not reside in the city during the summer, he or she may wait until the beginning of the fall semester and buy it at a lower, pro-rated price.

Any where I have worked has had a Payroll Tax or a City Sticker you drive on our Roads so why should you not help pay for them. You must be one of the ones that was written a Ticket for No City Sticker recently and is now wining about it....go figure

When you buy gas, you pay a federal and state tax to fix and build roads, even if that gas is for a lawn mower, you still pay it. Actually, those two taxes are the biggest part of the price.

641, 16th, 94/Main, 121, all of them run through Murray and are maintained with state motor fuel tax so yes, it has everything to do with local streets.

Ok yes genius. Those are state roads and do go through Murray. However there are several more roads in Murray that are not state maintained. Thanks for your time

I live, work, and vote in Marshall County but go to school in Murray five days a week. I do not think it is right for some one like me to have to pay for the sticker. You all say that it's just $50 like it's not a big deal, well for someone like me, it is a big deal. A college student generally makes minimum wage and then add in college bills, food, gas, and other necessities, a city sticker is the last thing that we need. I still live at home with my parents only because it is a great deal cheaper than living in Murray. The only thing my parents pay for is my food while I'm home and a roof over my head. Everything else I pay for. With that being said, I don't think it's right for students in the same situation as me to have to pay for the sticker.
You all have complained that we drive your roads and your police keep us safe, well what would be the difference if somebody lived on the county line and came to Murray almost everyday to go to the store, visit family, etc. The only reason I come to Murray is to go to class then I either go home or to work. I'm in the city at most 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. It shouldn't be my responsibility to have to pay such a tax. But hey, that's just my opinion. I hope that made sense, sorry if it didn't, I'm half asleep. Lol.

Its part of it. Everybody get over it and get the dang sticker. I live in marshall, i work for a company thats in murray. Every week i drive my car to my place of employement and park it. I get in my company car and drive back to marshall where i work all week. Once the week is done i switch cars and im in marshall until monday rolls around. The city still requires me to purchase a sticker.

If you live or work in Murray, you have to buy a sticker. I don't think you have to get one if you don't live in Murray and only go to school here. Who told you you have to buy one just for going to school here. Same for a kid that lives in the county but drives to Murray High but you only work on the farm, pretty darn sure you don't have to buy a city sticker. I would be checking that out.
