You're probably 16, and when you get to college you will just hate some of the non-trads because there are some of them do get the 19 year old girls. They're the guys 24-27 who've done a hitch or two in the Army and are going to school on their GI benefits. My daughter wants to date one of them it's fine with me. It's the immature 19 year old boys that I worry about.

My grand daughter has been pestering me to do it just to have something to do. She says that if you're over 65 you don't have to pay tuition.

In reply to farmer guy up there, I'm 26 and just recently re enrolled. I'm pretty sure that's false and if it isn't then this state is full of sh*t! I agree that all of our elders should be treated with respect but a free ride to college? U must be a 7 foot center that's gonna win the NCAA championship or a 240lb linebacker that runs a 4.3 forty? Over 65 or over a 105 nobody deserves their college tuition paid for unless they earn it..... And no I don't consider living for a long time earning it. Sorry

I don't know if it's the law in Kentucky but it is in a lot of states. Any citizen over the age of 65 gets a tuition waiver. It's not because they lived a long time. It's because people that age worked hard and paid the taxes that paid for your education when a lot of them didn't have the opportunity for it when they were your age. They were too busy in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Sure, there was the GI bill, but a lot of vets, especially from Vietnam, were so alienated and unwelcome on college campuses that they never used it. College admission standards were a lot higher then than they are now. Probably a third of the kids that get into college today would have been turned away 40-50 years ago. They are an asset to the young students too. I know guy in his 70s that takes one class a semester at Seminole State. He has connections you wouldn't believe and will go out of his way to help a kid that makes a good impression on him find a job.

hmm:

You may not like it, but yes, residents of the state of Kentucky over age 65 qualify for a tuition waiver. As for them not earning it, well... let me tell you.

My father was a diabled World War II Navy veteran. He was entitled to a free college education under the GI bill. He earned it when a Japanese kamikaze knocked a destroyer out from under him at Okinawa. But he couldn't go to college because he didn't have a high school diploma. That's not because he was a deadbeat dropout either. Back then parents had to pay for their kids books if they went to high school. There was this thing called the Great Depression. His folks didn't have the money and they were too proud to take charity. So he dropped out. When I graduated from high school I was eligible to go to college free because he was a disabled vet but nobody at the high school I went to ever bothered to tell me that. I went to Murray State and asked them what it would cost, etc., but because I didn't know about the tuition waiver that I was entitled to from the VA, I didn't tell them that I was the dependent of a disabled vet and nobody asked. My folks couldn't afford to pay so I didn't go. I found out about it 10 years after I graduated from high school but by then the window of eligiblilty had passed. I started to college when I was 40 and had to pay for it.

Mr. Retired Farmer, sir:

If you want to go to college to have something to do and can get the tuition waiver, do it. And if any self-centered smart ass like "hmm" has anything to say about it you tell them a sailor on the U.S.S. Pringle paid your tuition at Okinawa.
