When you are driving through intersections, you should be aware of what else may be coming through, such as emergency vehicles, or even citizens who are not paying attention to lights that have changed.
I hope all involved are doing okay...

let's see a sheriffs deputy totals a police car a couple of weeks ago responding to a minor incident. Now a waynesboro police officer crashes his cruiser...sounds like county and city need to have a review of proper response protocol, mandatory driving classes for its officers...not good pub for the county and city pd's....Ken any follow up on the county deputy involved in the accident a couple of weeks ago...was he fired or charged with any traffic violations...inquiring minds would like to know.....

If 71-year olds in Hyundais would just stop getting in the way of police cars running red lights, this problem would stop.

All cars should be equipped with police scanners so that when people hear a call come in, they can pull into a parking lot and wait for the all-clear.

They need REAL police officers in the counties around here instead of radar jockys! After writing 25 speeding tickets a day, these guys go slap nuts when they get to respond to a real call!

Driving an emergency vehicle while running lights and siren does not exempt the responder from using common sense. First responders are not train to blow through red lights without using caution just because they have on lights and siren. Its always the rookies or robocops who makes this mistake. It sets a bad precedence for all the other cops who do it the right way. Officers running code is train to get to a call as safely and quickly as possible, but if you are laid up in a hospital you are not any good to anybody including yourself. The same applies for citizens crossing the street. Would you rather be right and dead or right and alive. Just because you have the walk sign does not mean you close your eyes and walk across the street as there will always be an idiot who is not paying attention and drives right over you.

Is it not the law that ALL emergency vehicles need to slow down and LOOK before flying through a red light at an intersection???

Equip all police cars with hydraulic groin clamps, punish the cops before they get out of their freebie cars.

This a pretty regular occurrence in waynesboro for some reason (going back 20 years with at least one fatality). I wonder if they are the only bad drivers or if the other localities are just better at covering it up.

Evidently, Waynesboro Police were "First at the Scene of the Crash."

More non law enforcement idiots get involved in accidents than law enforcement! I guess no one running your mouths on here have been in an accident or seen one. They usually actually don't involve law enforcement. I have seen more people on cell phones cause accidents than cops driving to calls. Grow up!

You are right, it is not the law that they slow down. Those that don't lack common sense as the life they save can be there very own. If you do not get to the call safely you are of no value to the person you responding to help or to yourself. Plus it creates additional need for service by getting in an accident in route to the call he was enroute too.

Quit judging the policeman so quickly on this one. A policeman gets a call that there is domestic dispute going on- at least one of the people involved had a weapon on them. The policeman turns his lights and siren on and responds to the call. Somebody driving down the road see's police lights and hears a siren but they dont pull over to the side - they just keep driving. I am in no way see where this would be the policeman's fault. Put yourself in the shoes of the person who was being threatened with a weapon. Person is standing there holding a gun on you- do you want the police to come as slowly as they can- or do you want them to get their before you get shot at and maybe killed!!
I do feel sorry for the 71 year old man and his family- but to me- to keep driving when you hear a siren and see flashing lights- is a disrespect to the policeman.
It ended up because the man didnt pull off the road and a wreck occurred that it took them three more hours to catch the assailant with a gun.
Please people have enough respect to pull over to the side if you see a police car with lights going and his siren on!!
This was a lose lose situation for the policeman- If he hadnt tried to get their in a hurry- somebody would have said "policeman dont even respond in an appropriate amount of time." As it was the policeman tried to get their in a timely manner and because people disrequarded his siren and lights- it caused a wreck- and three additional hours to catch the assailant!!!
I dont always agree with the police- but I do realize they have a job to do. If I had been the person with a gun held to them- I would have wanted the cops really fast. I cannot fault the policeman on this one!!!
One of the first rules of driving I had learned in Drivers Training- when you see police lights and hear a siren- pull over and let the emergency vehichles through!!!

Yes it is the LAW! In the State of Virginia any Emergency Vehicle responding to a call Police, Fire or Rescue ar not excempt from any traffic law. You are not intittled to speed, or run stop lights or stop signs. The emergency lights and siren is a courtesy asking people to move.

To "whats up" You are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, by Virginia State law: You ARE required to move over to the right to allow the responding Fire, Rescue or Police vehicle by. It is the Volunteer Fire or Rescue person in his or her private vehicle with their red lights activated that under Virginia state law are required to respond observing the posted speed limits and other traffic laws. For the Volunteer, it is a courtesy for the public to move over. It really makes little sense when one considers that the vehicle is not a first responder but the person driving it is. When is the last time you saw a fire truck performing CPR?

I hope if you have a need for a police officer NOW, it will be the time they take their time....slow down for every s l o w driver out there, wait for the green light.....and finally safely arrive to your need.....what a bummer
