Helen,
What are your memories of Lao? She reminded me of the “Good Witch of the East” in Wizard of OZ, but in casual long skirts. I was not a follower of hers, so my time with her was unbiased. I thought she was very, very friendly. I had a good friend that read and studied her books, but I was just a local and Swannanoa was part of the sum whole of the mountain. I used to work (well, work for free skating, not money) at the ice skating rink and the ski slope (remember that? Just below Swannanoa). Too bad the whole mountain top is in shambles, including Swannanoa. The same person owns everything, Swannanoa, the hotel and the old Howard Johnson. It could be a gold mine w/ all the I-64 traffic. Swannanoa was a very cool place for locals, and I think very misunderstood by outsiders. Lao was a genuinely kind person. She would just talk w/ us about normal stuff, and always extremely warm and friendly.

helen,
my mom also worked at the inn, when it was the Holiday Inn. She worked at the front desk, but i am sure that was before your time. That was around 1974. When Pete Lang ran the ice skating rink. I believe it is a Mr. Delaney now that owns everything and is, evidently, reluctant to put any money back into the property. I am like you,
it will always be home to me. All of my family is still in Waynesboro. I was there recently visiting family also.

I worked for Pete and Bucky. I worked at the ice skating rink(for free ice skating) and then at the ski slope and golf course. Not a better man out there than good old Pete. I saw him a few months ago, hasn't changed a bit. When I worked at the golf course, one hole went right up to the back of the palace gardens. Lao used to eat dinner at Pete's restaurant. It was on the eastern side of the mountain. He knew Lao very well. Said she would come in for dinner often.

I remember Pete and Bucky. Bucky was working there when I was skating there. Also, my mom was good friends with Cherylynn and Gail, Petes other children. Do you know anything about where they are now? Gosh, that takes me back a lot of years ! I think I remember Petes restaurant. Wasn't it the Captains Table, or something similiar? It was located as you start down the mountain toward Ch'ville,on the left, across from the turn off to Afton ?

I have been contracted by a publisher to write a book entailing the ghosts of the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia...
In doing research for the book, I too stumbled upon Swannanoa. Even in its decline, it still exudes breathtaking beauty and seems to have an air of mystery lingering about.
Anyone with ANY paranormal experiences and/or local legend(s) concerning Swannanoa, please contact me at TallyTales@hotmail.com

I was actually married at Swannanoa Palace on July 8 2006. I looked up an down the east coast for the perfect place and came across the palace from a friend's suggestion. I contact the owner and we took a tour...I LOVED IT! I feel a special connection to the palace and did before I got married there. It was the most magical day of my life. The owner and his wife attended the wedding as well and stayed long into the night...we finally left around 2am! He had the biggest smile on his face and said it was the best wedding he had ever been to. He felt like the mansion was alive again like he remembered it years and years ago. I have some amazing pictures that I could share with those interested. I feel so lucky to have been able to get married at such an amazing place that has so much history. Imagine the parties thrown there years ago by the original owners. We partied under a huge white tent under the stars and overlooking the valley. I believe places like this are haunted, but not by negative spirits. They hold the secrets and the stories of those who have lived there and occasionally if we listen closely enough, we can hear them.

I was up there TONIGHT, me and some friends went and the owner now doesn't care if you go up there as long as you don't get out and stay there... but we took a pic with her camera of the house and all you could was PITCH black the ground and a tree and TONS of orbs(what they say are ghosts) and the other night we had our car in first gear and it WOULDNT move, it was like she was keeping us there.. i believe this place is haunted and so is the hotel the guy owns below the mansion...

I was wondering if you could send the pictures that you took of the Palace. I was just at the Dooley's home at Maymont and it truely was a spectical. My wife and I were thinking about possibly going to Nelson County to tour the summer home, but we are unsure of it's condition and would hate to be disappointed.
Thanks for your story.

This is not cool to go up there at night without permission. Would you like someone poking around your house in the middle of the night? The owner will let you visit if you ask.

Reading everything everyone has written is so interesting to me. I have only found two pictures or so online of this place. I want to know more!!! I live in Grottoes Virginia so I am not very far from the place. What do I do about visiting it? Is that possible at all? If anyone has any information I would really appreciate it. My Email is LovinMyMarine423@AOL.com
Thank you so much!

Dear LovinMyMarine,
You can call Mr. Delaney at the Inn at Afton, formerly the Holiday Inn. I have never asked him for permission to go in, but evidently others have and he will let you. Swannanoa has a very romantic and interesting history. Mr. Walter Russell and his wife Lao leased the mansion for many years and it was the home of the University of Science and Philosophy. They subscribed to a 'new age' philosophy of love. Mr. Russell was a world renowned scientist, author and lecturer and his wife was a world traveler who spoke to others about her philosophy of love and living on a 'higher plane'. What is interesting is that neither Mr. or Mrs. Russell had a college education. She didn't complete high school because in her husbands words, she already knew all there was to be taught and any further waste of her time would only deprive the world of all that she had to share. I grew up in Waynesboro and was, on occasion, at Swannanoa when Mrs. Russell lived there, but I never met her. I only know about her through a book of hers that she gave to my mother, who did know her. I remember seeing her once and she was very lovely and elegant. Her book, one of many she co-authored with her husband, was... um... interesting but a little far out there for my taste. Anyway, it was a beautiful mansion, but sadly, has fallen into a state of severe disrepair. Evidently people are trespassing and doing some damage. How sad. It was once quite spectacular.

I go to the Inn At Afton ALL the time which is also owned by the same guy who owns the mansion, I see him all the time. I'm good friends with the girl that works there. He hardly lets anyone go in there, but he's really nice about just letting people ride up there just don't get out because he gets too many break ins(which is TOTALLY rude). The place is BEAUTIFUL he let me and a friend walk around the property one day, it's AMAZING yet pretty dissappointing even though I still want to go in, we're going to do some paranormal experiments. This place is pretty creepy at night but SO beautiful during the day. I have pics on my myspace I took when he let us walk around, if you would like to see them my page is www.myspace.com/ndnsftball15 < add me bc my page is private just tell me you're adding me to see the pics.! The Inn is also haunted, I have my reasons bc of what I've seen and heard. But like I said he DOES NOT CARE if people ride up there he gets it ALL the time, just DONT get out of your car bc thats when he gets suspicious and thats when it's rude, b/c I've talked to the guy.

I would be interested in hearing any haunted stories concerning the mansion. I would even be interested in doing a paranormal investigation with any teams going up there. I was first brought up there as a child and fell in love with it. I met the lady of the home once, as a child and she drew me in. Later in years when i got my drivers permit, I kept going back to the gardens. Alot of times that school or whatever it was had tons of people around but I would just wonder around and do my own thing. I went up there a few times at night or during the day especially when I was a cocktail waitress at the bar in what used to be Holiday Inn. Id walk the garden's and property...I just love it there. I havent been up there in years but I keep thinking about it.

Tim ~ I found the link to this discuss tonight while trying to find more info about the house. Long story short, I have grown up here and lived here my entire life, since the 60's. I remember oh so well going for dinner at "Aberden Barn" on Afton Mnt. as a child, you knew it was special when you got to go there !! and the ice skateing rink, what memories. Use to be such a pretty place. But what I remember even more was my mother ALWAYS telling me we couldn't go down that road !! So you know, that made me want it more ! So as soon as I could drive myself ... I went down that road and discovered what everyone has, that beautiful mansion. I would go back many times over the years secertly showing my children and then leavng after a drive by. I had lived here my entire life not knowing what it was. I knew it had to be special. Last year after a days ski at W.green I just had to show my husband and he too was like my mom, Don't go there !! But I wasn't doing anything wrong, just looking. Back to the long story short, my mom met up with someone in Whole Foods in C.ville last weekend that really seemed to know a lot about the original owers, then he also told her in June there will be tours. Do you know anything about this ? Because now it's OK for her to wonder what's down that lane, silly mother ! Any info please email me at dkrassoi@ntelos.net

There are no ghosts or such thing at Swannanoa. It is private property and should be respected as such. If you want to visit, it can be done legally. Go through the owner as mentioned in previous posts. I simply do not believe the tale about classical music and the TV. As far as Lao Russell, I knew her personally and she was very “down to earth” and genuinely friendly. Not eccentric at all. I grew up in Waynesboro and no one ever had anything negative to say about Swannanoa. I think maybe Swannanoa was misunderstood, but after meeting Lao and hanging out with her, my impression is that she was a kind, unassuming woman.

You should do some grammar research. Here's a paranormal experience to consider: The publisher you believe contacted you to write something.
