I would love to speak with you Jeanette. I do not live in Richmond, so stopping by Maymont is not possible. However, I can be reached directly at info(AT)forsburgassociates(DOT )com. I can respond to your email with better contact information then. Thank you.

I believe this place is haunted as well when I was 15 I took a picture of the front with a camera cell phone a older one you can adjust the colors by yourself..I did that and a figure was sitting on the stairs with his/her legs side by side! I showed a couple people to make sure I wasn't going crazy and wasn't its def haunted but not with negative spirts. Ever since then I feel as if I am being watched if I drive up there.

When I was about 14, back in 1970, about 41 years ago, my family and I took a vacation trip to Virginia from Maryland. One of the places we visited was Swannanoa. I believe my mother found a pamphlet for it at the hotel in Charlottesville and we made the drive to see it. I remember it being breathtaking, and the gardens were simply gorgeous! We could only tour the first floor. During our tour of the inside, Mrs. Russel came down the stairs, which the tour guide said she didn't do very often. I remembered that she singled me out to talk to. I have no idea what we talked about, but I remember her being a lovely lady.

Now one thing I'm puzzled about. I recall a very, very large scuplture of Jesus being in the gardens. No pictures I've seen online show this, but I am positive it was there. In fact, I recall that's the reason my mother wanted to visit Swannanoa. Am I correct in my recollections?

I'm sad to find out how the place is decaying. It was simply beautiful when I saw it and prefer to remember it that way!

My parents took me several times as a kid. I have to tell you it is a disgrace to the palace and to the MEMORY of Walter and Lao Russell for anyone to say the palace is haunted or in any way having para normal activity. I could feel a strong presence of PEACE,LOVE,BEAUTY AND SPIRITUALITY the minute my parents pulled in front of the palace...I could not have been but 7 years old!!! I was intrigued, mesmerised and filled with a sense of belonging there and not wanting to leave. The Palace was at its most Beautiful time in its 100 year history coming in 2012 when Walter and Lao Russell had it as a school for the Science of philosophy.I feel PRIVLEDEGED to have visited there many more times with my parents and thankful they made that A CHERISHED MEMORY for me forever!!!

I was just there to show to my son. I had visited it long ago when tours were going on with music playing, the gardens beautiful, and the woman that came down the stairs in her gown to greet the visitors. Very eerie, sad, and beautiful! Anyway, I was very saddened to see how horrible it looks now. Hopefully someone is living there now because there was a cat peeking out at us through the window.

There was a large statue of Jesus there when I visited in 1982. It's name was Christ of the Blue Ridge.

Hi there. I'm considering hosting my wedding at Swannanoa, and I'm working with the owner on the details. I very much want to talk with a Swannanoa bride and hear more about her experiences with the venue. If you have used Swannanoa as your wedding venue, please email me at finnthepup at gmail dot com. Thank you!

I was actually married at Swannanoa Palace on July 8 2006. I looked up an down the east coast for the perfect place and came across the palace from a friend's suggestion. I contact the owner and we took a tour...I LOVED IT! I feel a special connection to the palace and did before I got married there. It was the most magical day of my life. The owner and his wife attended the wedding as well and stayed long into the night...we finally left around 2am! He had the biggest smile on his face and said it was the best wedding he had ever been to. He felt like the mansion was alive again like he remembered it years and years ago. I have some amazing pictures that I could share with those interested. I feel so lucky to have been able to get married at such an amazing place that has so much history. Imagine the parties thrown there years ago by the original owners. We partied under a huge white tent under the stars and overlooking the valley. I believe places like this are haunted, but not by negative spirits. They hold the secrets and the stories of those who have lived there and occasionally if we listen closely enough, we can hear them.

I so want to go visit this place but I have to find it first. How do you get there? I have lived in the area all my life & have heard about it but have never been there & after reading everyone's posts I am even more interested now to go see the place.

Take rt 250 up the mountain as if you were going to get onto the Parkway. Right before you get to the road that takes you to the entrance of the Parkway, you will see a road to the right that leads up to Swannanoa Golf Course. Before you get to the Golf Course (way before), you will see a road that "v's" off to the right. That will take you to the driveway that leads to Swannanoa Mansion. I was just up there this past weekend.$6.00/adult, kids under 12 are free. They are only open for tours certain dates. They post signs saying "Open House" that will help lead you there. Hope this helps you find it.

Went to Swananoa a couple of times, first I was a guest, then I brought a guest. Funny how the place beckons you to return, and want to share the existence and knowledge that seem to have been gathered in its walls. The serene beauty of the palace along with its gardens were forever etched into my memory, and of course who could forget the giant Christ statue. I have often shared a bit of not so trivial knowledge imparted by a tour guide when visiting for my first time. The guide was a young woman whom I thought Mrs. Russell introduced as having been from U.VA. This was probably about 1978. Part of the information shared was the Mansion/Palace had been built exactly the elevation and distance necessary to survive a direct nuclear hit on Washington,D.C. Does anyone else recall ever having heard this? The deterioration or neglect others have written in the forum saddens me a great deal, even though I was raised in Northern Va.I spent a great deal of time in the Shenendoah Mtns. and went to Madison College. There are few places in this country that could even come close to the beauty of the Blue Ridge merging with Skyline Drive. Oh yea, when s**t does hit the fan, bring your own sleeping bag and flask.

Molly from Pulaski,NY... I lived not far from there in 2005/2006. I worked at the gas station below at the Skyline/Parkway connector, which was owned by the same man that owned the Inn and Swannanoa. I was overwhelmed when I first went up and saw Swannanoa. First thing I wanted and wished I could do was fix it, clean it up and make it beautiful again, as I could see that it once was a grand place to see. I had a feeling there that is indescribable, like I wanted to belong, but could not? hard to understand I guess. My life changed, and I moved back to Michigan so I was not able to stay and be a part of it sadly, but I did drive through there again in 2010, I see they have closed the gas station and started cleaning up the area- hopefully it's going to be improved around the area, has Swannanoa changed ownership ? Anyone that knows, or better yet anyone that remembers me from the gas station- E Mail me at [email protected]
Thank you !

By the way- yes, the guy that owned it when I was working there will NOT fix anything!! While I worked at the gas station, the ceiling was falling in and rain would pour into the building badly, yet he wouldn't fix any part of it! Same went for his properties in Charlottesville, the city condemned his buidling and tore them down, later sending him the bill for demolition - so you have to know, he certainly was not willing or interested at all in repairs on Swannanoa. I was also told that he loved cats, and had Many living in Swannanoa at that time... certainly not being cared for!( honestly, he didnt care for himself either- teeth falling out, smelled like a goat from a mountain - just plain filthy)

Pretty soon, he wont have to worry about the renevations that he has promised, because if you look on the public records for taxes in Augusta County he owes over 32k for the property.......

It is such a shame how Phil Delaney has allowed everything to turn to trash. I remember coming to the Valley in the summers with my Grandmother to visit family, and I remember the beauty. I remember eating at the HoJo and all the gift shops.

I went there today to show my significant other the hotel because I kept saying how wonderful it would be to own it. Of course it's not for sale. It's a shame that the community doesn't get involved and make him bring the buildings to code and restore the beauty.

So sad to see everything turn to trash. I can't imagine what tourists think when they come of 64.
