Lynchburg Shouldn't Name A Highway After Jerry Falwell

I was born and raised in Lynchburg, Va. but am ashamed to tell people where I am from for fear they will bring up Jerry Falwell. As far as I'm concerned he took a lovely town and ruined it. I used to work for the United Way in Lynchburg and people would come there from out of town who had signed over their homes to JF's church, but when they got to Lynchburg, he "didn't know them" and they were penniless. His son's new sports car was registered as owned by the church. I could go on and on. Just don't name our streets after this man.

You do realize lynchburg was voted nationally as one of the safest cities to live in, in the United States. Lynchburg has a low crime rate, business has increased tremedously because of the late DR. Falwell and Liberty University. Presidential candidates and other politicians have visited Lynchburg because of Dr. Falwell. Im sure your life is much more exemplerary than Dr. Falwell had lived his. Im sure you have done more for God, Country, and Lynchburg than Dr. Falwell. Post your feets here so we can boast together about your qualities and deeds. Look at other cities in the U.S. that havent had great conservative leaders, im sure they're doing much better than Lynchburg. If you were born and raised here you should save yourself from embarrassment and just move.

Dont even refer to him as a Dr. True Falwell brought alot of business with LU. But this doesnt excuse is bigotry. There shouldnt be anything named after him

Jerry Falwell has done a lot for Lynchburg and I believe that it would be justified if a section of the Lynchburg Highway 460 be named after him. While Jerry Falwell may have said some bigoted statements, this does not balance out the good things he has done for Lynchburg, LU, Liberty students, and the conservatives around the United States. I am a student of Liberty University and I thank God for this University. I do not pretend to condone everything that Jerry Falwell has said, but I also can not ignore what he has done. He has reached a lot of people for Christ and founded a Godly church and university. In founding LU he also brought a lot of business and attention to Lynchburg that the city would not have otherwise had. I do not believe the bad things that he has said outweigh what he has done.

Too late on naming that section of the road. I would have thought that when they cut down all the trees on that mountain to make the hideous "LU" out of rocks that that would have been enough. I have a very hard time believing that God would have been happy about all the deforestation that took place for self-gratifying branding on that city. It's bad enough that you can see that eyesore all over Lynchburg, but now he has part of the highway named after him.

I definitely agree about the LU sign, that was a major waste of time and money.

I just drove through Lynchburg and could not believe that US 29 bears the name Jerry Falwell. Here of some of the comments made by this "Christian" man.

And as many little old ladies signed their houses over to him as is claimed, he problably had more social security and social services money than a whole city full of unemployed auto workers!

I think that if they do that any Federal Highway money should be cut off. Jerry Falwell was a bigot who helped to ruin our country and set the stage for the hate in this country.

He does not deserve a street or road named after him.

Wasn't it Jerry who died on the crapper with his pants around his ankles and not "at his desk"?

in all honesty in a few short years it won't matter what lynchburg was they will turn the entire city into a tax exempt church. then the Christians will willingly accept it. they don't live here they have no right to make any decisions in lynchburg they are all worthless little trash bags and deserve to be thrown out. why do they get to be tax exempt they don't give people jobs. they've taken away from this city. anything that happens to this city is because of them like the new theater which is a waste of time and effort and the rest of the building which were free. what makes him any better than us. and the last time we let a church control our governments there was a war over it so don't say that there isn't any reason why they can't have their own country. the other thing is that if they did have their own country they would all be homeless considering that the church use to take your home and any other physical things. religion is evil in entirety

Lynchburg is named after John Lynch who founded the town. Lynchburg was chartered in October, 1786, and named after its founder (John Lynch) who not only founded the town, but also helped to make it an important commercial destination through his ferry service (which was actually older than the town itself).

It doesn't matter if you "accept" it or not. The fact is that it exist, and it is in Lynchburg. If you hate it so much, why don't you pack up and move?

As much as despise what Falwell preached and stood for, there is no question that he helped revitalize Lynchburg. I could care less if a highway is named after him.
