Save the George M. Jones Memorial Library of Lynchburg forever
Georgia Morgan Jones (1824-1904) was a remarkable civic minded citizen, businessman and philanthropist with little formal education. He donated many thousands of dollars of his earned wealth during his lifetime to many institutions for the benefit of humanity. One of those institutions and buildings he paid for with his hard earned money was the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, VA.
Here are some of the pictures of this fabulous building completed in 1908 four years after his death:
His wife Mary Frances Watts Jones (1824-1920) was responsible for carrying out his plans and desires for this magnificent library which remained in operation in Lynchburg for about 80 years. Mr. Jones and his wife suffered enormous tragedy in their lives by losing three children at early ages.
Here is a history of the public library in Lynchburg, VA documenting the demise of the Jones Memorial Library in the above magnificent building: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/VALib/v52...
When individuals put up money for something, they dictate the rules for use of the money regardless of whether anyone else likes them or not, or whether they are politically correct or not. The rules for this library dictated that only Whites were permitted to use it. Regardless of whether you like this rule or not, or whether you think it is morally defensible or not or whether you think it is right or wrong, this was the rule established by his wife Mary Frances Watts Jones in her will in 1920 for the use of these facilities called the Jones Memorial Library provided by the many thousand dollar building created by their hard earned money.
The desires of her in behalf of her former husband were demolished by the Civil Rights laws of the 1960s where the Federal Government demolished our U.S. Constitutional requirement that no person can have property taken without any due process of law as was arbitrarily and capriciously done by this law. Again, regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his restriction in the will of his wife, this was their prerogative since they put up the dinero (money) for this fabulous library. The demands of her will were flushed down the toilet by the federal government. In other words, our government violated the very Constitution they were sworn to follow in passing these illegal laws solely for political correctness, at the virtual point of a gun.
However, an interesting development has happened which could benefit those politically correct folks who do not agree with her restriction of the use of that library by the White race only. The former Jones Memorial Library of Lynchburg, VA is today for sale for $429,000 here: http://www.historicproperties.com/detail.asp...
This magnificent building, over a century old, but just as magnificent today as it was over a hundred years ago when it was brand new, is now available for anyone to save, restore and use for the benefit of themselves or humanity or both. How about it politically correct folks who did not like the restriction of Ms. Jones in her will?
This fabulous building, in the same image and quality as the Carnegie Libraries of that period, deserves to be saved regardless of that restriction of White only in the will of Mary Watts Jones. How about putting your money where your mouths are and purchasing this building and saving it for posterity? It is already on the National Register of Historic Places.
Actions speak louder than words. It would take many millions of dollars to construct this building today.
