"There was no market for the paper we started in 1974. We made people want to read our paper."

"The newspaper that vanished this week was a much diminished thing, a distant relation to the once-proud Gazette. It died the death of a thousand cut corners."

Hartford Courant, and all the other newspapers who think you have some kind of God-given right to be in existence, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?

I doubt it.

Let's be clear about something: It's not the recession that caused me to cancel my Courant subscription. It's not the Internet. I love holding a paper in my hands when I read it.

I don't think I'm alone.

I chalk up with dissatisfaction with the Hartford Courant to its deterioration of coverage, lack of quality writing and story ideas, in general. There is a lot happening in Connecticut, and without question better ways of writing about them.

The Courant's reputation as the leader in statewide news coverage is gone. I'd rather read the New York Times, as I do, and watch local TV news to find out what's going on around here.

The recent redesign is another in a series of misinformed efforts (eliminating Northeast was another) to catch the attention of readers and advertisers, and it just plain isn't working.

What needs to happen is this: the Tribune sells the paper to a local buyer who has deep pockets and a commitment to quality journalism, good storytelling, and a clear mission to report the best stories in the region. I'm sure that's what a lot of Courant staffers wish for, too.
