Is there a state or federal agency which oversees collection agencies?I'm in Illinois, and I've just received two demand letters from a collection agency in Illinois. I recognize the bill amounts and the hospital from where they originated. My insurance paid 80% of one involving the hospital and the doctors, and 100% of the other involving some emergency treatment. My insurance company paid within two months of the billing, and I paid the remaining 20% over a year ago. I've received no other bills since then.
I called the agency, and they say if I don't pay that they can ruin my credit. I asked for proof that this is a totally different bill, and they said that I'm the one who will have to show proof of any payment. I plan to do that.
But I also want to send a letter to some agency to report them? I think this is a scare tactic attempt to bill me twice for what's been paid.
