The way this state runs public schools makes no sense.

That's a hopelessly broad statement. What's wrong? Relying primarily on property taxes to fund them? Charter schools sucking your tax dollars out of your town? The Chapter 70 funding formula? Do you think teachers are overpaid? Do you think school buildings are the problem?

And if you think "all of the above," how would you do them differently?

Where to start??

1) We sink to much money into failing schools. Throwing money at problems NEVER makes them go away.
2) Teacher's unions.
3) The way funds are disbursed by the state.
4) Forcing small towns to scramble to make special accommodations for special needs kids. And by that I don't mean kids with ADHD, I mean blind, crippled, retarded, etc.

I could go on but those four problems alone cause more issues for towns outside of 128.

Nothing in the article documents the significant increase for a district that is shrinking in student population. Over 15 million when the next article has Ayer at 8 million, add another 4 or 5 for Shirley and it is 13 million. If we regionalized with these two twos we represented about 1/2 the budget. What gives??

FY09, 019 Ayer. Expenditures Per Pupil, All Funds.
Total $16,637,061. Per Pupil.$12,314.90
NOTE, this is Ayer only. Time to talk about the real cost of the schools.
