Department of Public Works officials are urging residents to be patient with efforts being taken to clear snow in city streets after the recent storms, but also to report any related problems they may be having.

"If they call us, we'll go take care of them," Withington said. "But if we don't know about them, we can't take care of them."

Withington is good for about $110K per year in salary and benefits. Obviously, the concept of a simple checklist eludes this public servant.

I would hate to plow for the city. People know it's going to snow but they still park on the streets.

Sorry simple justfelloutofatree. But he has to take care of every street in the city. Now go shovel out your sisters walkway throw down some sand and be happy she doesn't charge you rent.

Fitchburg is a difficult city to maintain. The streets are tight and it was built on a hill.

Well again you have stupid people that don't move their cars and leave them on the streets. These people use the excuse that they don't have off street parking. Well they should make some kind of arrangement to park their cars during a storm.

It's funny but true. Some people park on the street and then complain they got plowed in? If I was a plow driver for the city I would have every car on the steet towed. It's bad enough you have to be awake all night plowing the streets but now you have some idiots car in the way. If you can't find parking Main street has parking garages.

Copied from the City of Fitchburg web page:

Announcements:

The snow emergency/winter parking ban will be in effect in the City of Fitchburg until Sunday, December 30, at noon. Parking is prohibited on city streets, and vehicles that are parked on the streets are subject to being towed and/or ticketed at the owner's expense."

How many vehicles were actually towed?
How many vehicles were actually ticketed?

Answer-none. Fitchburg cops do not work outdoors from Labor Day through Memorial Day.

I think the police are starting to give up hope. You would have to turn the airport into an impound lot to hold all of the cars. Just look at people like Lynch. His car gets impounded and then he tried to sue the city for impounding it. I hate to say it but some of these people put a quarter in a parking meter and stand around waiting for a gumball to drop out.

Good post, Hugh. You bring up a good point about the cops working outdoors during the fair weather only....Hey, isn't that porker MacNamarra holding the important title of Traffic and Safety Officer of the FPD? How come fattie can't step up to the issue of illegally parked vehicles during the snowstorms? I guess that he prefers to give his working boys a little break during the snowstorms; letting them doze off in their cruisers so that they will be well rested for all those paid details that bring their yearly pay up around $100k and in some cases more....what a f-ing scam! It's the next best thing to being able to print out $50.00 bills in your basement!

The FPD caught hell a few years ago for ticketing during a snow storm in the college area. It's a damned if they do, damned if they don't scenario. If they had ticketed illegally parked cars during the snowstorm it's a safe bet that you'd be on here complaining that they're heartless and should have let people slide given the tough economic times etc.

Actually, I am perfectly fine with cars being ticketed for illegal parking during snowstorms. The only way to properly plow our streets is if there is a clear path from the curb on the right over to the curb on the left.

My beef with our blueboys issuing parking tickets to illegally parked vehicles has to to with when they pick and choose when to enforce the laws; based on who is doing the illegal parking. A great example of this was taking place over at JR's Pub for years running. We all know that the FPD took a tough, zero tolerance stand on illeagl parking from one end of North Street to the other. Well. I should say that they took a tough; 99% stand against illegal parking on North Street. Somehow, Chuckles The Cop and the Siomos clan was given a free pass for any and all illegal parking on North Street; while everyone else was quickly harrassed by the Fuzz for parking illegally on North Street. It was a sight to behold; alright. Police car after police car would drive straight past the illegally parked cars and motorcycles over at JR's Pub as if the vehicles were all invisible. It defied logic; but it is a great example of cops deciding when to enforce the laws and when not to; depending on just who you are.

Needless to say; that porker MacNamarra was completely useless and ineffective during JR's Pub's 3 or 4 years of non stop parking infractions. No surprise there!

The city actually had many vehices towed. About 100 of them. The city does not have to advertise this in the newspaper. Aldrich towing had 5 tow trucks out non-stop towing the vehicles. The city gets $78 for each tow from Aldrich.

That's good to know. And is it safe to assume that the request for tow goes to Aldrich via FPD or can Aldrich or any contracted towing firm just pull cars that are clearly violating the parking ban?

The police have to request the tow. Aldrich cannot tow a vehicle without the police consent.

"The city actually had many vehices (sic) towed. 100 of them."

Wow! 100 vehicles, huh! Funny, the Sentinel article made no mention. What streets saw this towing extravaganza?

I didn't know the Sentinel had to report on everything the city does?

Is this something new?

You're surprise that te S&E didn't report the whole story? I wouldn't e surprised if the story was reported as new a month from today. If you want current news on the happenings in Fitchburg and Leominster then the T&G would be a better source. The Sentinel is always a day late and a dollar short with the news.

Update Sunday AM 1/6/13:

Fitchburg was pelted by a driving snowstorm during the early morning hours. Snow depths ranging from 1/16" to 1/8" have been reported.

Nevertheless, the payroll patriots at Fitchburg DPW seized the opportunity for double time and sanded my side street 3 separate times between 6:30AM and 9:00AM. Anyone could realize the dedication of these "workers" while they passed by at 30mph spreading sand/gravel that will not be cleaned up until October. Imagine the sacrifice of these caring and dedicated employees giving up a Sunday morning with their families to make our roads safer during this calamituous weather event.

The winter is the only time the DPW gets overtime. This is nothing new. Good for them.

It's the private contractors that are being paid $80 per hour that need to be reviewed. They don't even drop their plows onto the street so they won't have to replace the plow after a season thus leaving the streets with snow moguls.
