I was wondering if an amber alert has been issued for this girl? And if not, then why?

I cant believe that they have not issued an amber alert for this young girl. This young girl has beeen missing for over a week. I feel sure if it was a family member of a prominent local citizen it would have been done immediately. My prayers have been with Elizabeth and her family and will continue until she is found. I think this is a shame and disgrace that this has been treated in such a light manner.

Oh that one is easy - you see her family is hispanic and probably since the last hispanic youth who was said to be "missing" but later was found to be a runaway a while back, these racist police don't value a minority child's life to be valuable enough to spend the money and manpower to search for them. so their families have to beg the Gov. on TV to issue some kind of command because these cops are cowards.

God knows how many more kids this man has or had buried in his tunnels underground. hold on to you kids tightly

I watched an interview with the sheriff of Kershaw County and was sickened by it. When asked why an Amber Alert had NOT been issued he got very defensive and said there was no evidence that the girl had left the area. WHAT!? I thought one of the primary objectives of issuing an alert was to locate the child and bring them to safety BEFORE they left the area. He got REALLY upset when asked if he thought the search for this child had been handled properly. I doubt he'd feel that way if it was his daughter that had been trapped in a hole with a monster for ten days. I hope the voters of Kershaw County are sitting up and paying attention.

I hope people in Kershaw County will finally see its time for new law. If your not part of Mr. McCaskill special group of people you get no law. The girl is safe but not because the local law helped.

You all are exactly right. It's ridiculous that in this day and age we are still operating under the law of a bunch of racist bigots. It seems more than obvious that due to her hispanic ethnicity, the "law" wasn't nearly as concerned as if it had been an upper middle class white girl of the same age and the circumstances. How sad. And by the way, I'm an upper middle class white mother of 3.

yeah, i just love it when the tide changes into something good or hopeful and then you see these loser police down here showing up on the Today show or GMA as if they were out there day and night turning over every leaf to find this child. then they wonder why people don't respect the office of the law. its unfortunate that this sherriff dept. had a written criteria for abductees or i would have loved for this family to sue the hell out of that department.

The Sherriffs department wasnt the one with the athourity to issue an amber alert. Did any one out there know that there was a deputy at their house 24 hours a day for the last 10 days and that the Captin and Sherrif were doing 18 to 20 hours a day for 10 days straight hunting down leads and trying to look for this poor child? Everyone is quick to judge the Sherrifs Departmant without all the facts. The family certinally has no issues with the way the police handled it all!

SC RESIDENTS ARE AWARE THE KERSHAW COUNTY SHERRIFFS DEPARTMENT DID NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO ISSUE AN AMBER ALERT WHEN ELIZABETH WENT MISSING. HOWEVER, THE FAMILY IS NOT 100% SATISFIED WITH THE WAY KERSHAW COUNTY (SHERRIFF MCCASKILL) HANDLED THIS CASE. HE NEVER WENT TO THE SHOAF'S HOUSE DURING THE 10 DAYS ELIZABETH WAS MISSING AND THERE WAS NOT A DEPUTY AT THE HOUSE 24/7 FOR 10 DAYS. IF MCCASKILL HAD THOROUGHLY SEARCHED FILYAW'S HOME IN 2005-2006 HE WOULD HAVE FOUND THE HIDDEN BUNKERS UNDER AND ABOUT THE TRAILER AND POSSIBLY COULD HAVE MADE AN ARREST AND NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE EVER HAPPEND TO ELIZABETH! YOU COULD PLAINLY SEE ON TV MCCASKILL WAS UPSET AND EMBARRESSED WHEN ASKED IF ELIZABETH’S SEARCH WAS HANDLED PROPERLY…BECAUSE IT WAS NOT! THIS CHILD WAS NOT A RUN-AWAY AND HE AND HIS STAFF WERE SO QUICK TO DISMISS HER AS ONE. THE SHOAF FAMILY BEGGED FOR MCCASKILL’S FULL ATTENTION AND FOR ADDITIONAL RESOURSES TO BE CALLED IN TO HELP FIND ELIZABETH. KERSHAW COUNTY POLICE DID NOT TAKE THIS CASE SERIOUSLY UNTIL ELIZABETH SO BRAVELY TEXT MESSAGED HER MOTHER. THE RESIDENTS OF KERSHAW COUNTY NEED TO SERIOUSLY DESIDE IF MCCASKILL IS WHO THEY WANT AS SHERRIFF WHEN ELECTION TIME COMES AROUND. I SURELY WOULD NOT MY CHILD'S SAFETY TO BE IN SHERRIFF MCCASKILL'S HANDS.

The Sheriff's Department made wrong assumptions from onset. They labled her a runaway, not listening to the family. They should have had SLED involved the day of her disappearance, but for some reason they don't like to have other law enforcement's help in Kershaw County. The family had to take matters into their own hands and get flyers made up and posted throughout the county. The Sheriff's office did not take this child's diappearance seriously until the mother received a text message on Wednesday and then it took until Friday to get a location tracing the phone. The whole investigation was taken lightly and performed sloppy. To top it off, the Sheriff stated that he "would not have done anything differently." I hope Kershaw County is ready to vote November 7th for a new Sheriff, it sounds like this one is ready for retirement.

Well there are a lot of post from people who seem to know a lot about the whole deal. This may take a while so hold on.
Lucy-she was never listed as a runaway. Please let me know what SLED could have done that the sheriff did not do. please let me know how I saw sled, usms, schp, dnr, rcso there. I saw deputies put out posters as well. the text message was the key. In what sounds like your law enfocement knowledge may be more than thiers you should give them a hand.
fay- richland- there is such a thing as the fourth ammendment that regulates searches. it also sounds like you were there and have first hand knoledge.
barbara from fl- You should worry about you own back yard.
dimm007- I am sure that in your little world of the internet you can decide it things were handled the way you want them. do you know how much sleep the sheriff had? do you know how many times he had that question posed to him? I did not think so.
linda- i would like to know what you think is a light manner. Do you have any idea of the man power and assets that were on site? when any of you get some facts or first hand info, just let me know and we can type from the safty of our homes.

casey- columbia unless you are in the situation they we were placed in, then you dont have much to say. i have a lot of issues that have not been addressed yet concerning my daughters case and it is not right for you to judge other people usless you went thru it. i have and trust me there was alot more that could have been done. things that should have been dealt with differently.

Apparently you all don't understand the purpose of an Amber Alert. You have to meet certain criteria or it will do know good. What information was there in the Shoaf case to issue an alert on? NONE!!!! Just because you believe something should be done doesn't make it right.

You are correct but remember there are limits to what police can do legally. I personally know that the police did all that they could do with the case they had to work with. Do you honestly think that the law enforcement involved didn't want to find the child?

The criteria for Amber Alerts are set by the legislature, not the local law enforcement.

When your judgment is questioned, I'm sure you would react the same way. He was only asked the question 1 millions times and the answer was the same. Also, the police cannot just barge into someone's home and search when they feel like it--there are things called warrants that are necessary. Besides, how many people dig holes through the floors of there homes. Come on--use some common sense!!!

Mom- I could not begin to imagine how you and your family must feel. The comments by other people who were not there, who act as if they know what happened. There is a time and place to discuse issues that you may have. You and your family have the right to have your questions answered. my coments were ment to calm the fires of people who are quessing what happend. speculation and conjecture breades ignorance.

MY backyard is doing lovely - thank you very much and that is why i can get on these boards and make comments. you're so quick to judge us on our comments but just know that when we read and turn on the TV for news we SEE interviews and HEAR the reports from the horses mouths. i believe that when it comes to these types of cases, there is no fabricated and contrived news story. this town is too small for any news station to get away with that. so if there is something that Richland COunty, kershaw county or any other county doing an investigation, i'm certain it would be imperative for the contact between the departments to be on point. in other words - we heard and read what they wanted for us to hear and read and now they are kicking themselves in the ass for it.
