Disappointed

Columbia, SC

#1 Apr 12, 2009
I had read several online reviews concerning the pros and cons of Anytime Fitness. Even though the cons weighed heavier than the pros, I was excited to visit their facilities and speak to someone in detail. I was actually ready to sign up, pay the bill, and get started!! When I arrived (about 4:30PM, Friday April 10, 2009) the front door was locked. I peaked inside and noticed an employee there, but thought she didn't see me. As I prepared to call their number from my cell, a woman appeared at the front door (not sure if this was the owner or an employee) and she asked, in a very annoyed tone, "Can I help you?". I told her, "I was just about to call you since the front door was locked, Do you always lock the door when you're here. I realize you have to lock the door after hours?". She said curtly, "No, not when I'm here." Then I said, "then why was it locked?" and she exclaimed, "I' was just about to leave (with keys in hand)...she paused, and then said reluctantly, so, is there anything you need?" By this point, I was pissed. I said, "Why yes, I am here to visit your facility and possibly join!". She rolled her eyes and preceded to let me inside where I received a short, half ass tour of a small room, with no TV with your cardio machines, some free weights and Nautilus machines, a few fitness balls, a tanning booth, and a mini fridge which she described as a snack area. When we approached her office she just stood there for a while and then asked if I had any questions. I said, yes, I do, for one do you have to sign a contract for years or can I join month to month. She seemed offended, "month to month, why would you want to join a gym on a monthly basis?". I said, getting more annoyed, "Because maybe I don't want a long term contract hovering over my head." She then acted kinder, "Oh, I'm sorry, some people move in a month and I'm just curious why you wanted a monthly contract. To be honest, she said, every gym I know of in Columbia requires you to sign a yearly contract. I then said, that's not true, the YMCA downtown lets you join monthly and cost the same if not less than your gym. She said smugly, the YMCA... that's not a "real" gym. I said, Yes, it is, it has several floors with running tracks, indoor pool, instructors, and classes all included in the rate...your gym, on the other hand, is a small room with some weights in it. She exclaimed, but we are open 24 hours. I laughed and said that doesn't make you a "real" gym. I said, "thank you but no thank you". and walked out extremely angry. I was so shocked by her behavior. Obviously, the Anytime Fitness on Devine street is not hurting for new business since I was ready with cash in hand to join. If the owner/employee would have been nice, warm and accommodating, I would have joined...ignoring the obvious cons and signed a 2 year contract with no problem. Bottom line: Not worth your time and money...the customer service and attitude was poor and inconsiderate. Join a "real" gym like the YMCA or Body Fit!

I am the owner of Anytime Fitness on Devine street and would like to address your concerns personally.
First, I would like to apologize for the experience you had at our facility. Like all Anytime Fitness owners, we strive to provide a workout facility with top notch equipment, a safe, clean, friendly, and helpful environment. We want to create an opportunity for people to improve themselves second to none.
Your email was very surprising in that it is literally the first complaint I have even had about this manager, in more than a year in her role. I have owned five locations, and currently still own two, and every manager I have ever had has had complaints.
Our facility isn't for everyone. We don't have tv's mounted on the wall, but rather state-of-the art flat screen LCD tv's mounted on each and every piece of cardio....it sounds like things were rushed, and maybe you didn't get a chance to see those.
That was Good Friday, and our manager was gone by 3pm. She actually had the day off, but came in to help a few members with their workouts. However, she does remember you, as do several other members who were in the gym that day. And, while I believe that you are sharing your experience as you perceive it, I don't believe it is an impression shared by the other people in the gym that day.
I hope you have found a facility that meets your needs and that you are well on your way to reaching your fitness goals.
Sincerely,
DKR

I am a member of Anytime Fitness and live a couple of blocks away. The manager there is wonderful. I can't believe she would ever say a harsh word to anyone. I recommended Anytime to many of my friends and several joined. We have a marvelous time there.

I am a member of the one up here in Irmo, and I have had a stellar experience. I get lots of personal attention, the place is clean, modern, and has lots of different options for workouts, including personal training sessions.

You only get out of it what you put into it...if you need help, want attention, or simply have questions, you have to ASK. I have never had a bad experience there, and have had a great time learning about the different machines, muscle groups, and weight loss options from my trainers. But they are NOT mind readers, and you can't expect anyone to simply know what you are looking for.
Perhaps you both were having an off day that day, but give it another try. Ask questions, look around, ask if you can try it out for a day or two and see if you like it. I doubt they will say no, and I bet you like it more once you have a chance to GIVE it a chance.

Good luck.

I just joined Anytime Fitness in Garland Tx. I love it!!! The day I joined I was given a one on one with a trainer. She walked me through all the machines. I never knew how to use alot of them before this session. Besides the place being clean and the Tv's on every machine, it is so convenient to be able to let myself in at anytime of day or night. Because of the one on one training, I am already seeing a result from all the working out. Something that never happened when I was going to 24hr Fitness. I have been going for almost a month now, and have nothing negative to say about it.

Note to anyone looking for a gym to join: disregard all negative comments you may have previously read in this blog. I joined Anytime Fitness in Terre Haute, IN on March 22nd of this year and have nothing but good things to say about my experience. The staff have been extremely friendly and helpful, the facilities are impressively clean, and the equipment is state-of-the-art with built-in color television on each machine. In addition to making changes to my eating habits, I have lost 37 pounds in just a little over 2 months in large part due to the convenience and effectiveness of this gym. At a very reasonable price for all the resources being made available to you, I highly recommend anyone and everyone to make it a point to check out your nearest facility (which probably isn't far from home because they are EVERYWHERE!!!).

I'm on the verge of completing a 2-week trial at Anytime Fitness. My lasting impression will be that this is a great gym for beginners. The atmosphere is very conducive for people that are not interested in the stereotypical gym experience. I, for one, enjoy playing basketball and having a greater variety of equipment/services to choose from, so I will be keeping my membership at LA Fitness. I was considering Anytime since it is literally located 1/2 mile from my house, but given the fact that the clubs are equally priced, this benefit does not outweigh the benefits of a great club like LA Fitness. If you're young and athletic, you'll find Anytime kind of a boring place to be... just my opinion. Regardless of where you join, have high expectations of not only your club but of yourself as well!!

I have been a member of Anytime Fitness for several months and absolutely love it. I can go whenever I want and still be able to get the cardio machine I need that day. Up until January, I had been a 5 year member of the YMCA--and was always waiting for a machine to use.
The facility I use offers Yoga, Zumba, Bosu and Pilates. It is clean and the management staff is excellent. It is a very nice facility and I would recommend it to anyone.

I joined a anytime fitness off Canton Hwy in Cumming,.GA and never again!!! The service is horrible, when I tried to cancel my membership the representatives gave me the wrong information and they are currently are still trying to debt my account every month, even though I requested to have my membership canceled. They are now saying that I owe them $129.35 for Oct, Nov and Dec coming up and I have not used there services or been to their gym in 5 months!! I already signed a two year contract with Bodyplex (which is an awesome gym) Due to the lack of training with the employees, I would beware if you are trying to join this gym!

Summer time is here, and I'm wanting to join a gym to stay in shape. We got a new anytime fitness just a couple of blocks away from my house. I'm considering to join, but after reading the reviews I'm not sure if I want to spend my money on something I won't enjoy. I have one friend that is a member of this very Anytime Fitness that im thinking to join, she seems to enjoy it pretty okay. I just hope I will too. If not, there is a very nice one just a little further away but it also costs more. Actually, alot more. But they are very professonal at this other gym, and gave me an hour tour. We laughed and had a great time just walking around getting used to the place. They introduced me to some of the trainers, who also were all very nice. I have not toured an anytime fitness just yet, but thinking about doing it soon.

South mountain phoenix location 32nd st and baseline. Owner has all the equipment paid off so the office workers aren't worried about signing up members. I went in because I was interested in going to a closer gym but it seemed like my business wasn't wanted. I had to give myself a tour of the facility and after contacting other locations I learned they all have different rates. This location only offered 12 to 18 contracts and I was told rates were going up once they hit x number of members. Better off with one of the big name gyms that offer more bells and whistles while showing flexibility on their prices. This inconsistent business won't last trust me. Unless u like paying close to 50/month on a single membership.
