Something to consider if you are not planning to vote:
The most beautiful rose can be destroyed by allowing sucker branches to grow unchecked. This happens in all areas of life not only in the garden but in our homes, schools and our government. Sometimes things need a good trimming to encourage new growth.

We are down to two weeks till we see what the Citizens of Huntington want. Do we continue with the same old same old or do we move for a new direction?
I am excited to see what the Citizens want. Having a choice has been a long time coming. This election you have three choices that will make a difference.
This time around it will be your decision, please make the right one.

For those of you who pick up the "Huntington Herald" looking for the candidate statements, mine is located on 5A.
Here is what I actually said:
My name is INA CARDWELL and I am running for Huntington City Council.
I have been a part of Huntington since 1972 when I married my husband, Ted CARDWELL. Ted’s family has roots in the Huntington area dating back to 1846. We moved back in 2007 and became “city folk” after many years of living in the country. We love Huntington and I want the best for our town and its people. We have four children, three live in the Huntington area, we have grandchildren attending Huntington Schools. So not only our past but our future is here in Huntington. I have nothing to gain by being on the City Council except making decisions that will benefit the Citizens of Huntington.
I would appreciate your vote.

That is what I read, except the one in the local paper is a little longer and sounds a little better than this. The only thing is the L or the R in the last name. Seen it both ways around town. Quotes are there- "city folk" and about "having nothing to gain", yadda yadda. All the candidates had similiar stories. I liked seeing Mrs. Ebarb's and Mr. Boles article though. I hadn't heard much on them until now. The lufkin news ran articles about the candidates. A question/answer. I think Todd Ricks had one of the best on that one. Some rambled on and some didn't say enough, like Denby. I wish he had said more. I've known him for over 30 years and know he has more to say than that.

I am glad you are reading the articles. I hope you will also do some research on what you are thinking. My question is, have you voted?

I put my ballot in Thursday. School board and council. School board is a big deal too but not as much is said about it. It is important. I came across this and others and lufkin news on line about 3 weeks ago. You can pay for it but if you have a printed one sent you can get it free on line so I did. Made me see some sides of you candidates I did not know. Some of them I know from them growing up some I only hear about around town.

Where did Ted find you, Ina?

Hello Andy, How is Opie?

You are right about the school board! I have to get on the ball and make a decision.
The only one that has been recommended to me so far has been Tracy Neal, but I am not a great fan of school board members who have a spouse working as a teacher during their tenure.

I am also NOT a fan of preachers on the board. Same for city council. I haven't forgotten the past preacher attempts to get rid of the RED DEVIL name.

I would vote for anyone that would direct a school board policy that orders the same butt-busting that existed when I went to school.

He found me many a moon ago on Timberland Drive, back in the day when Dairy Queen and the Car Wash was the place to be. You know way back in the day when a paddle was feared and schoolteacher's family couldn't be on the school board.

I went by city hall and voted. I also told the two ladies in the city office that I wanted to request about 2500 city records.

When I came out the blonde lady gave me a form to request records.
I told her I hadn't made up my mind which ones I wanted yet.

You are so bad, you know requesting records becomes addicting, you can't request just one. I am glad you voted, now you can gripe when things aren't done right.
Did you happen to notice how many votes have been recorded from yesterday?

I'm sorry, I didn't think to note the amount that had voted.

On the 2500 records, I told them I was a member of the Stua family.

My era for those that could "hang" .... was downtown (courthouse square, Lynn-- Texan -- Pines Theater -- Brownies Café etc).
No malls. No Timberland Drive.
Night -- young folks and adults was the skating rink on Atkinson Drive just west of the present loop.

After Timberland Drive was constructed came Reads Broilaburger, Rays Drive In, Saddlers, A&W Root Beer.

I can remember the only TV received in this area was Ch 2 out of Houston if one had a very tall outside antenna. Then there was the Redland Drive In movie on 59 north. Then after Timberland Dr, the Panther Drive In movie.

Seldom was anyone robbed, assaulted, purse snatched, etc.

In Huntington was the Kay Picture Show. First, on Main by the Mexican Restaurant, then later on the highway across from Lopers.

I just want to do my Civic duty and pass on our City Secretary's message. "Please get all your family out to vote on May 11th." The board assured her they had been texting and calling everyone to go vote.

I just want to say I hope everyone votes too. Including all my family, friends, and Citizens of Huntington, this may be one of the most important elections we have had in a very long time.
Do you want things to continue as it is? That's really the only question to ask yourself.
